Mistakes made with Coeliac dieseae? (Eating & Drinking out)

Hello,

I've recently discovered that I have coeliac disease and while the gluten free diet is working wonders at home, I've been away two weekends in the last month and have had extremely severe stomach symptoms each time. I had thought I'd been careful at every restaurant, asking for my food to be prepared without soy sauce, or what gluten free options were available etc. I'd also stuck to wine, spirits and fruit based cocktails because I know that there is gluten in beer and ale, I don't feel as though the 2-3 drinks I had each night would warrant having such a bad stomach. I'm a bit at a loss. The gluten free diet has transformed my health, but if I go away for a few days I'm so ill. Has anybody with coeliac disease had a similar issues? If so how did you resolve it? I'm sure it's some mistake I'm making with my choices of food or drink, but I can't put it right because I don't know where I'm going wrong.

Thanks for your help

Rachel

I tend not to trust establishments so would suggest you check carefully whats in mixer drinks... dont just take the word of the staff ...

Also - with regards to food - play safe as much as you can unless you trust the place ! And you can always research on line prior to eating there as customer feedback is very informative - some places like bella pasta for example will do gluten free pizza bases without any prior notice...

jacket potatoes are usually a safe bet and heinz sauces are often gluten free - so you can always take a sachet in your handbag!

I was pleasantly surprised the other day when I went in a local pub and saw the menu stating quite clearly GF - hopefully things will keep improving - good luck !

Yes, I'd agree on that. Check all labels when you are away, EG mustard, vinegar, that sort of thing. I'm really very careful what I eat when I'm away.

We had a terrible thing happen last year. We paid a lot of money for a 5* hotel, and went for a walk on the beach, stopping at a cafe for gluten free cake. They'd got it mixed up, and I spent the rest of the day being very ill indeed. It was awful. I said to my husband that it was the best gluten-free sponge I'd ever tasted. I should have known! But it was clearly labelled gluten-free, but home -made, so it was their labelling. So you have to be very careful indeed. It doesn't happen often. Also, don't eat crisps unless you've seen the bag - that's the sort of thing that can do it for you. Good luck.

Another tip - many flavours of seabrook crisps are labelled as gluten free and are available in multi packs of 6 for £1 - in many supermarkets...

You have my sympathy there. It's so much worse to be ill on holiday. Yes it must be little things like sauces or mixers etc. I just wish it was easier to eat out, if the restaurant hasn't checked the ingredients themselves a lot of the time they don't know if it's gluten free either.
