Modic 1 and 2

Hi My mother tongue is not English, but I try to express myself as good as possible. I am suffering sever low back pain after a hole life with regular sport (TRX, Biking, Walking). Yes I had once a bad fall on my back and I heard something cracking in my spine, but that was all. Because I had no pain then, I went one. Four years later my back pain began and did not stop until now. I could to sport until three years ago, very moderate. If I did to much I was in very, very bad pain to a couple of days. My back pain increased, in the end I could not put my trousers on standing. I have seen many doctors no one mentioned that I have Modic chances on S1/L5 and a VERY thin disc between. The modic chances are mixed 1/2 and the volume is the have of the vertebrae on both sides. "That is normal .... you have to live with that, nothing to do about". I have to work and have a child, how can I do my jobs with this nasty, burning, sticking pain 24h/7d? Byside I can not do things witch would help me chearing me up a bit, like a hike in the mountain or skiing or have fun with jumping around with my child. I am like in a prison of my own body. I send my MRI to Odense and was told that I have very clearly a bacterial infect in my spine. Because they are also running a MAST center in Spain I had contact also there. They give as a antibiotic Amoxilin 1gx3/d f. 100 d. But in all the papers of Hanne Albert studies they uses Co-Amoxilin (with Clavulanacid). Does anybody have a idea why they don't use the same type like in the studies? Thank you!

    Hi Nia,

I have just had my mri scan a few days ago and have been diagnosed with modic stages 1/2 just like you. a year ago i was operated for slipped disc on L5S1 which went well but not great, the pain was not completely eliminated but at least I got a big chunk of my normal life back. I walked, swam regularly and did pilates but tne pain never completely disappeared. the last month it all came back so the mri stated as i mentioned above. I have been researching online and a study in Norway experimented on amoxyllin antibiotics 750mg ( they did not mention Clavulanacid )for 100 days and the feedback is quite encouraging. I have an appointment in 2 weeks with my doctor and I'm hoping he will start me with this treatment. I just need to stop feeling this constant pain. I understand your pain very well and I honestly hope someone out there can come up with some medication to help.... it is unbearable at times. Please keep me posted on any news/results you may have, I will do the same.

Hi Stephens I am sorry to hear your story. I know exactly your kind of pain. It is a special one, not to compare with the normal muscle pain most people have, when they are talking about their back pains. I thought a very long time, how I can go on. I spoke with 2 doctors (one a pain specialist and one a orthopedic specialist for the lower back). BOTH of them knew about the MAST (Modic Antibiotic Spinal Therapy) and the studies of Hanne Albert in Denmark. One was even at this congress when she had her newest presentation. But BOTH said, I would not suggest to do this treatment. And non of them offered me a other solution to protect the intestinal by using probiotics or inject the antibiotic directly into the disc, which could also be done (mostely the solution for rich people-then the pain goes away in about 2 weeks). Hanne Albert told me that they are also running a MAST clinic in South Spain. So I will go there. I found here a gastrointestinal specialist, which is willed to control my side effect, if they would be some at some time and will also control my blood from time to time (kidney and lever), very important. I did not talk to people about this treatment, because nobody understands that there is no other solution to modify this nasty and constant pain. They told me at this MAST clinic that I really badly needed this treatment (my 2 vertebraes are half filled with oedemia and fatty tissue. They also told me that I will not be 100% back, maybe 70-80%, but still I hope to hit this level! I have seen that there are some MAST clinics in the UK. If you google you will find them. If you want to know more bout the clinic in Spain, let me know. They are treating mostly people from Norway and Denmark. Other contries do not even know about this non sergically but "once in live treatment", but you never know.

Important: I had a tooth root fracture for many years, which the dentists couldn't see clearly, so the bacterias could find their way to my damaged disc. Tooth-gum and skin management is very important to avoid the bacterial type of modic changes. My advice: send your MRI to Hanne Albert to her MAST clinic in Odense, Denmark. She does it for free. If you have a bacterial Modic changes, she will help you. She could maybe send your doctor the treatment protocoll, so your doctor could lead you best trough this treatment; which is a long way. Let me know about your next steps or write me if you should have some other questions.

      Hi Nia,

It was so nice to see you reply with all the interesting feedback and its so helpful as there is not much on the web to help. I would really be interested to learn more about the antibiotic injection you mentioned and as I have medical insurance to cover. I have tried searching online but have not been successful so any information you can give me is much appreciated. Thanks and you're in my prayers.

      Hi Stephens

Thank you for including me in your prayers! Yes, I hope this treatment will help me to win back my old ME! I did a lot of researche about modic changes. There are three reasons of getting modic changes: 1. mechanical reasons (like skoliosis), 2. auto-immuno reasons (rheuma ect) or 3. bacterial infections over the blood. First of all you need to send your MRI to Hanne Albert, who discovered this third reasons of getting modic changes and did a lot of paper work over 15 years now. If she says you have a bacterial infection which can be treated by antibiotics, go for it! You have nothing to loose! I heard that there are possibilities to get antibiotic shots directely in to the discs, but very, very rarely done, because, there are not many doctors who 1th know about the bacterial reason of bact. infection doing modic changes and 2nd who dare to do interdiscal injections. Hanne Albert also says that all stages of the modics are painful and modic 2 is not very stabel and can still change again to modic 1, back and forth. It is VERY important that modic change patients have a activ exchange about their disease. So they can get some power and knowlege about what they can do to get better without operations, which should be the last option. I will pray for you. In the Internet you will find also a test for modic changes with specific questions, to find out if your are a candidat for MAST. Please keep me informed about your next steps finding a good and open minded medical doctor.

Hi Nia, how kind of you to reply and keep my hopes high. I will prepare an email for Hanne Albert and if you have an email address, I would be obliged. My doctor's appointment is late next week but my radiologist reports states modic changes stage 1 & 2. A second advice is always useful. I will definetely keep you informed with my situation. On another note, while researching online, I can now confirm that you were right about the antibiotics being Co-Amoxilin (with Clavulanacid), it's just scary putting so much into your body for 100 days and if I can handle it well. Anyways, best is to take it one thing at a time and see where it takes me. Please also keep me informed about your development and any new findings you may come across. Thanks again.

Hi Stephens How I wrote you before, you will find Hanne Albert in the internet, she runs a modic clinic in Denmark. Under contact you will find her email address and also the clinic phone number. I do not think that she will give any medical advice (2nd opinion) without have seen your MRI. But you can try. I was in Spain in her orher modic clinic and had 4 lasertherapy, a big presentation what MY MODIC is , I got the AB's and a lot of good probiotics, advice for further supplements and how to behave the next 100 d. Because my disc is so thin, no doctor would risk to inject there, even one with a lot of experience. So far I am well, no change with my pain so far. If this treatment should help me, I should feel a light relieve in about 5 weeks. They told me that this will ve a long way! Let me know when you got a answer from Hanne Albert or your next steps. THANK YOU &. Cheer up!

Hi Stephan Did you contact Anne Albert? You can also phone the Modic clinic directly. So I did too. SHE did a lot of research for over 15 y about the different types of modic changes and they will be able to tell you if you are a candidate for MAST. I reallY hope you did contact her and you will get a answer which will gelo you how you can go on to get better.

If you have any questions or news just let me know. Wishing you a relaxing Sunday.
