Mom got rejected as a candidate for kidney transplant

Hi,

My mom has had kidney failure for almost 2 years and has been on dialysis since then 3xweek. She also has well controlled diabetes, high blood pressure, and from being in the hospital so long, she suffered from some physical disability (uses a walker and sometimes a wheelchair--also cyst in her spine/nerve pain). Anyway, she recently was evaluated for a kidney transplant but the hospital denied her, saying she isn't a good candidate. I still need to find out more from the hospital to see why but she doesn't fully understand why.

Wondering if any of you have advice on what to do now. Is it worth trying at another hospital? Or even overseas? Thanks.

    Hi,

There are many factors that would come into play when medical teams offering a transplant but the main one is the safety of the person who is to receive said transplant.  Have they just given an out right no or have they given advice on what to do to improve chances of acceptance.

A transplant is a high risk operation for a usually fit and healthy person so they take into account things like blood pressure if this is high they won't go ahead due to serious risk of bleeding so this has to be under control.  If a person is over weight they won't go ahead as it is also dangerous.  The medical team won't take the decision to refuse a transplant lightly so there must be health factors where they feel it is not safe to go ahead. They will weight up the risks between remaining on dialysis and actually having the op.

If a person doesn't understand a decision they should always go back to the dr that made the decision and ask for further clarification and explanation, I would also ask what needs to be done to have the decision reconsidered, for example controlling BP, possible treatment of other conditions or weight loss.  It needs to be a dr who explains their decision as you don't give a full medical history plus none of us are drs on here so best ask the decision makers for advice.  I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you for replying. Your reply makes a lot of sense. I will get the letter my mom received from the hospital and try to to better understand it. Then I'll follow up with the hospital about any changes she can make to improve her chances. Thank you. smile
