Mom's bowel cancer, help

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hello,

This past Saturday April 9th, My sister called to tell me my mom has a tumor 5 cms on her bowels... I flew right away Tuesday 3000 kms to be with her as the results of the biopsy wore until wednesday... She has cancer, and her gastroenterologist wants to operate right away (tomorrow Saturday 16th)... We went to an Oncologist yesterday, and he told us to wait for more test and results... I am confuse... Should she be operated right away or wait? What are the pros and cons of this decision... Please help me as I don't know anything about cancer, thanks.

I'm sorry your family and your Mom is going thru this.

I just read some about colon cancer and it is treatable...years ago...alot of people died from this. But, if they remove the cancer...keep it from spreading...she will get continued treatment and hopefully she can be saved.

What made her go to the Dr?  I'm asking because if she is someone that regulary goes to the Dr. and has the checkups required for each age...like colonoscopies....it is easier to cure if found early.

I am scared. My colon is burning and I feel more pressure and burning in the anus. Could this mean that I might have tumor?

Andy, your problem could be one of many things, the only way to determine what it is is through tests.  If you are concerned about the possibility of cancer I suggest that you press your doctor for, as a minimum, a blood test to look for the CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) although this is not a completely definitive test it can eliminate colon cancer if the level is low - high levels would indicate the need for further tests such as colonoscopy.

Cathy, this advice applies eaqually to you.

Thank you for replying to me Anthony. My next visit to the GI dr I'll ask for this test but as you know the doctors get offended when the pationet ask the to do something. I have tried hard to get them to listen to my concerns and asked the if there is other ways to other then colonoscopy but they keep ignoring me. They only want to do colonoscopy and be done with it.

Cathy colonoscopy is the best way to check anything in your colon. Don't be afraid it's nothing... When I did mine I got sedated and I don't feel anything... my symptoms are bleeding and thin stools but the result of of my colonoscopy are diverticulosis and internal hemmorhiod... I also undergo blood test/xray and ctscan and all came back clear

I suspect that there is the need for a CT scan to see precisely where the tumor is located and whether there is the possibility of nearby lymph glands being affected.  Bopsies taken during colonscopy shows that there is cancer but not precisely where - the surgeon does need to know where it is so that he can plan the operation..

I went through the same process in 2014, colonoscopy followed by a CT scan.  Surgery would normally have followed a few weeks later but I opted to take part in a trial in which three cycles of chemo were given before the operation, so it was about 10 weeks before the operation.  There were 9 cycles of chemo afterwards.

My last tests showed me to be clear but I expect to be monitored on a reglar basis for some time, in the meantime I'm back to normal with no after effects.  I do not know how old your mom is but I was 77 when diagnosed so age need not be a problem factor.

I hope all goes well for you during this worrying time.
