Monovision... Near vision for makeup application.

I'm scheduled to have enVista monofocal lens with near vision of 2.0. Having read all my life I wanted to be able to see close enough for reading. Now I'm concerned that it won't be close enough to apply makeup. Any advice?

-2 is a pretty strong near target so reading should be good in all but the darkest lighting situations and I don't wear makeup but I would think that if you can read well then makeup would also be fine? Or does makeup require even closer focus than reading? Also with makeup you'd be using strong lighting I assume so that would help. And of course there are also magnifying mirrors which would help I think?

I don't do makeup, but targeting -2.0 D should be lots good enough for makeup, and I would think reading will be pretty good too. I am at -1.60 and can read very well for normal purposes. If one was reading books with smaller print then -2.0 D would be better.

If you are going to do distance with the other eye, then -2.0 is pushing the limit for monovision differential though.

I think you are saying that they will be targeting -2.0D for your near eye. That will put your best focus at about 20 inches, which corresponds to 10 inches from a flat mirror.

If you want to go closer, you could use a concave mirror. Those are pretty common, with many using a flat mirror on one side, and a concave mirror on the other.

From a fellow near-vision person who does wear makeup: a magnifying mirror is your friend. They come in 5x and 10x versions (the latter if you really want to see every pore!) and work really well.

I had monofocal lenses (Tecnis) inserted in July of this year. + 13.00 in my right eye, resulting in -2.25, and +14.00, resulting in -2.50 in my left eye.

Prior to the surgery, I would apply makeup by looking at my full size lighted makeup table mirror (about 20" distance give or take) while wearing my glasses (my Rx was -9.75 and -10.00). I'd then take my glasses off and use a small tabletop mirror to apply whatever couldn't be done while wearing glasses. Now, I can do all of my makeup without glasses while looking at the full size lighted mirror. I lean in ever so slightly if/when needed, but I can see to do even the smallest details. I've used my tabletop mirror to apply makeup when away from home without a problem. FWIW, I've never been able to use a magnifying mirror, and I don't use one now

You should be fine at -2.00 to see to do makeup. You'll find that you can see at a further distance what you previously could only see at a closer distance.

*I was pretty nervous about losing my near magnification "superpower" vision, and also prioritized being able to see close enough to look into a mirror to remove debris from my eyes (my dry eyes have always been a magnet for dust, lint, cat hair....). Otherwise, my ophthalmologist might have targeted -2.00 (for my first eye at least).
