Montelukast - blue pills

Posted , 3 users are following.

This might seem silly, but I'm wondering if there is any difference between that Montelukast tablets I was taking (which were orange/brown in colour) and the ones I have that came with my last repeat prescription, which are blue. Both are Montelukast 10mg. I know that different drug companies produce drugs with different packaging but these blue tablets seem to be giving me a side effect. About an hour after taking them I feel strangely disconnected and I think I might even have had short black outs. This feeling reoccured every few minutes and lasted a couple of hours, I've stopped taking for the time being but my asthma is quite bad at the moment.

Daryl drugs companies are often using what you call a 'generic' name.

They are exactly the same composition as say the Montelukast you refer to.

    I also take Montelukast

Personally I would make an appointment with the GP who understands your history of Asthma. I doubt if the new packaging/generic name of the   Montelukast is affecting you in the manner you describe.

sooner you sort this out the better. Hopefully you will gain confidence in this product.

Thanks for the reply Helen. I decided to continue taking the Montelukast because my Asthma seems suddenly much worse in the last few days and I can't go more than about three hours without Ventolin. I've booked to see a nurse for an Astma review next week. I used to take Flixotide inhaler as a preventative, but I was moved on to Fostair. As far as I can tell Fostair is doing nothing to keep the Asthma at bay, so I will discuss which preventative medicenes are best for me. I took the Montelukast earlier today than usual, early evening rather than late, and although I still had a little wierdness 50 minutes later it didn't last more than a few seconds and didn't reoccur. It may just be that having used Ventolin a lot in the last couple of days, and struggling to last more than a few hours without it I am hyperventilating a bit.

Hi Daryl. I use Symbicort 160 2x daily, sometimes extra puff when I am in a dusty place. No Ventolin as "they" informed me it was affecting my heart- huh.

I have had other drugs but this one works well for me.

      Dear Daryl

I too use Symbicort twice a day (200/6 dry powd inh 120 dose) and Ventolin 100mcg two puffs twice a day. I also take Montelukast at night.

November to February are really difficult months for my brittle asthma.

I have to say no-one has ever mentioned to me that Ventolin may affect my heart. Ventolin and Simbicort are effective drugs in my experience.

No. they didnt tell me until my heart started uncontrollable racing -  then told me I should not be using the two, just use the Symbicort. Because of this I have to take a heart drug every day now. HUH

Hi. A lifetime of chronic asthma and drugs. Two years ago my heart played up, they decided I had SVT.=Verapamil. Now they say I have atrial fibrillation, one Amiodarone daily and 160 Symbicort morning and night. I sleep on my sofa as I have to sit up or I wheeze. They tried to give me 320 Symbicort but I refused and am quite controlled. Not in damp weather tho. As I have taken drugs all my life just to breathe I never overdose and do not want to be a guinea pig for new drugs. Look on Drugs.com and find out your interactions and side effects - good luck --- less is better !
