Mood Swings!

Posted , 12 users are following.

Is (or has) anyone else experienced alot of mood swings with prednisone? It seems I'm depressed one day (or 1 hour!) and the next day shortly after taking my dose of pred., I'm in a very good mood, sometimes , even when I'm not physically feeling all that well! Again, I'm SOOO confused by all these new Daily changes. Is it just me, or (hopefully) can someone else relate to me??

Definitely I am on year 3 Prendisone 5 mg but if I miss a day the depression seems less....

in fact if you are taking anything else it may make it worse. I’m taking Omega 3, and walking more..

    you are not alone

You are definitely not alone in this Lynda!  when I was first diagnosed 15 months ago I was on 20 mg pred and felt like a  Budgie on Trill!!  Totally elated and FULL of energy.  Now, struggling to get below 9 mg my mood is usually fairly low but alternates between that and feeling really contented.  I think I mentioned in a previous reply to you that having creative projects to keep you occupied and using some form of meditation like Insight Timer app really helps?

    Good luck and Go Well.

Lol..."budgie on a trill"! Is that an English deal?? That Did make me laugh, and I thank you for that! I'm a California gal myself, so I'd be more prone to sayin' "Stressed to the Max" or "Really Bummed", whatever works....it's all the same feeling....NOT GOOD!!😉

      Hi Lynda,

I'm English born but lived in Australia for all of my adult life.  The expression "A Budgie on Trill"  (Trill is a budgie feed packed with trilly vitamins etc) comes from the Kate Gilbert book PMR GCA A Survivor's Guide" which I recommend.

Your question reminded me of the beginning of the song "Sometimes I am in a mood".. Bob Dylan ... Yes, prednisone/PMR does enhance mood swings, short temper, etc. It has to do with reduce ability to cope with stress/emotions. It does get better at lower dose.

Yes, pred can lead to mood changes - especially in the hour or so after the pred hits your system which is something under 2 hours after taking them. That is part of the reason doctors say not to take them in the evening as they may wake you up. Others find pred makes them sleepy so it isn't always the same.

I’ve really been doing research as I’ve put on 30 lbs. my asthma is under control and better as I’m living in a different area away from pollution- the Prendisone must b taken @ breakfast, with food, not just coffee. Movement also is good, but anxiety can creep up, for no reason. Started using Aqualife to make water alkaline and everything is evening out.....starting to cut down as Rx from MD.yes mood swings for sure. I’m following a very long program as it stays in system long time. You are not alone

I FEEL YOUR PAIN, sophiesu! It's been 1 and a half weeks since I've weighed myself, and I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow! I'm scared to death to step on the "scary" scale! Last time it was up 13lbs in just 2 weeks! Thank God that was the 1st gain. It's so weird tho' as my clothes are getting baggy???! I don't THINK my brain is getting heavier😁. In any case, all these daily changes are Really starting to get to me. One day up, one day down. One day flat, one day round! And so it goes and goes and goes......

Try cutting down the salt, but I can est 3 croissants.

as I’m starting to cut down I found a lot of interesting

postings from md what the Prendisone does to the body

and  ways to take it spacing out more hours between doses.

    suggest you look it up.....

im starting to feel like myself doing a self imposed rehab

In PMR pred should be taken once daily, preferably in the morning. There is no need or point in spacing out the doses any further than that - the symptoms will be back once the antiinflammatory effect has waned.

Pred Head beats menopause mood swings ! At first it was a shock. My tolerance levels for bad behaviour changed. I would go off like a rocket...husbands eyes would pop out of his head...and it would all be over as quick as it started. A couple of years later on pred, I quite like it, as I am not usually depressed for long. My mood changes quicker. You are certainly not alone.
