mood swings 50mg 2months in

On 50mg for 2 months now, I've obviously always had mood swings but I feel like they've gotten worse, suicidal thoughts won't go away and its harder to keep my composure and have started breaking down in front of people. Are these side effects? Or is the medication not working yet? I'm a bit stuck on what to do

    Hi Alice,

Some people seem to reach a turning point after a couple of months, although it sometimes takes an increase in dosage to 100mg. Have you discussed this at all with your health professional? I'm worried to hear that your mood is worse than when you first started on your meds. Are you receiving any counselling or any other medical support at the moment? Sertraline is helping me with my suicidal depression (so I can relate a bit to your thought processes, although everyone's experience is different). I was on the wrong meds for my first 2 months of suicidal depression so I did feel a lot worse. My psychiatrist switched me to Sert at the beginning of Jan and I'm a lot more clear-headed now than I have been for several months. I feel as if I have more control over my thoughts, rather than them controlling me. It is a daily battle but I'm motivated to keep going as, like most of us, I want my life back ;-)

Please keep us posted on how you are feeling. You are not alone - you have a new circle of online friends who will help you through this.

    Good luck, Digsby x

Thank you digsby that's so kind (and helpful). Im due an appointment with my gp though last time I was seen by a stand in Dr who didn't ask me any questions, signed my prescription and left so I didn't get a chance to ask for help then. I'm starting counselling over the phone on the 17th which I'm a bit scared about as I've never talked to anyone about it before. Hopefully it gets better after this month

      Thank you again x

Don't be afraid of the counselling, Alice. It might make it better that it is not face-to-face. You probably have a lot of bottled-up thoughts and feelings, that perhaps you have never been able to share with friends and family. Many of us don't want to, or don't know how to give this burden to those closest to us, but we do have a deep need for someone to understand us. Take one day at a time until you can see your regular GP again, and I hope the counselling will help. Be positive about yourself to combat the self-destructive thoughts. Do whatever you can to distract yourself and re-awaken your natural mojo :-)

Keep in touch. Big hug x

Yeah I accidentally missed 2 consecutive days of setraline because I left them at work and those were the only days I wasn't constantly having suicidal thoughts. I mean I was still super anxious and was still feeling horrendous but I realised that I wasn't having horrendous thoughts anymore. I think I'm going to ask to go up to 100mg because its just gotten so much worse than before. I'll let you know if it gets better after upping my dose x

I'm not a medical professional but I think if you may be hallucinating then you need to contact your Dr asap (presuming its caused by the medication) and get them to give you something else, ive heard it can sometims be a lengthy progress to get on the right path of treatment and ultimately getting better again. i have never seen or talked to people that have died so i have no experience or advice to give you brian im sorry. I hope you get better x
