More on vitamin D

Morning one and all

In a daily newspaper today the sunshine pill is now proved to cut blood pressure this vitamin really is getting pushed at the moment useless information on this site but some may be suffering with it.

Just thought I would mention it.

    Hi,  I have been on Vitamin D3 for about 2 years as I was found to have a low level following a wrist fracture when a dexascan revealed osteopenia.  I also have high blood pressure, can't say I have noticed any difference, however I have an under active thyroid and since taking D3 by blood test levels have changed. I did

    read that many with this condition have low Vitamin D3.  In fact I have heard it said that more people are low on this vitamin these days because we use suncream and don't get enought sunlight.

      Yes mine has just been found and it can effect the parathyroid gland my specialist said it can help with depression and anxiety,suggested 15 mins. a day unprotected sun no cream on.

      Hi Yes I am sure your specialist is right in saying that it can help with depression and anxiety.  After many months of almost completely being housebound I am trying to get out and about all be in not very far because of arthritic pain.  I have to have another scan in a couple of years.  I wasn't given any other treatment for the osteopenia except

      the D3, my calcium levels were fine. Fingers crossed your scan is ok.

      Yes Thankyou my calcium is o.k  so what do you take for pain,I have gotta headache from hell at the moment.

      Hello Libra Lady,

      Here in Canada where winters are long and although quite sunny, our skin is not exposed to sun, in late fall on TV, there is always a report at news time that we should be taking our vitamin D every day until spring. It can be in tablet form or Omega 3 pill form, krill or cod liver oil like our grandmothers used to take all winter or in food such as sardines or salmon. But we do need it, all of us who are sunshine deprived, especially in winter. It protects your bones, enhances your mood and boosts your immune system so you are better protected from cancers and autoimmune diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and IBD, inflammatory bowel disease.

      As a matter of fact, guess which country in the world has the highest incidence of the auto-immune disease Multiple Sclerosis?... Scotland! Is it no wonter. It's a beautiful and green country...but even in summer there isn't a whole lot of sunshine. The closer to the equator, the lower the incidence of MS. There are almost no cases in those sunny areas of the world.

      I was in Italy a few years ago for 3 weeks, walking all day in the sun through the Amalfi coast and never put sunscreen on my very white skin...(my heritage is Irish). (not recommended but for me, it seems to be fine). I got a slightly red nose on one day only. My aim was to soak up as much vitamin D as possible. You store it so if you go south in winter, you can coast on it for a while.

      I have been putting bottles of vitamin D in my children's Xmas stockings for over 20 years. I like my vitamin D in Barlean's lemon flavoured cod liver oil because it's digestible and very tasty. I put it in my morning smoothie. I take 1000 IU but there is suggestion that we need a lot more. Dr. Oz who has a medical show in the US, is originally from Turkey, a very sunny country. He had himself tested by taking increasing doses of vitamin D to see at what point he reached his daily requirements and it was 7000 IU! So if genetically you are from a sunny country (your ancestors), your requirements are more than the recommended 1000 IU. Taking calcium, magnesium and vitamin D together is also recommended because they are well absorbed together.

      Minerals, vitamins, enzymes and botanical type supplements as well as lifestyle changes (diet, activity level, exposure to fresh air and sunshine, plenty of rest, a positive outlook on life etc..)  are the kind of 'preventative medicine' that should be encouraged so that down the road one doesn't have to resort to prescription drugs with the risk of all their side effects.

      Hope this helps and encourages people to take their vitamin D supplements and to get out in the sun when possible. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

      Hello,  I only take paracetamol not always strong enough and use hot water bottle and microwave bag for pain in neck.  I might on rare occasions if desperate take 1 ibuprofen 400 but haven't done so for ages.  I used to suffer from lots of tension type headaches and migraines, fortunately not so bad these days.  Apart from saying make sure you are well hydrated I don't know what to suggest as I can't take codeine type painkillers either, but there are supposed to be good like

      co-codamol and codydramol.  Sorry can't be more helpful.

      No I cannot take anything other than paracetamol no codiene or anything,like you I use heat bag and ice,I do drink a lot not alchol
