More pain

I am 5 1/2 weeks post sugery. Is it normal to start having pain go down your arm to your wrist? I don't feel comfortable with or without the sling.

Also I asked my doctor to stop giving me oxycodone and put me on vicoden, my last dose of oxy was last Thursday. I am a raving lunatic. Do you know how long it will take my body to adjust to the vicoden from the oxy?

Are you wearing the sling with the square pillow imobalizer?  I had that one with my right shoulder surgery and was in a ton of pain from day one to now, and now im 4 months post opp.  Now i just had the same exact surgery on my left shoulder with very little pain and all it was all the pillow imobalizer, this time I have a aluminum brace thing and it feels great.  The other one was cutting off the circulation.  The oxycodone does suck!  always feel on edge.  Good luck.

Yes, I am trying to go longer each day without it. Right now I feel like it's choking me. One more week until I can quit using it.

There s no "normal" with this bear of a surgery

You're going to have weird pains that come ,leave, and new ones come.

    Be patient

Slow and steady with all. I am 5.5wks. After a repair failure. Pain has been 0 unless I am doing something pt wise or doing something I'm not quite ready. Are icing?? I am still icing 30-60 min 2-3 times or more per day. Use the ice. Wean off the narcotics and use the otc. Are you doing pt? Perhaps start a journal or diary. Keep posting online. It definitely helps this journey. Hang tough you can do it! You will get through this. Take care!

You had a failed repair i thought.

OH GEEZ!!!  I am sorry to hear it failed.  Yes, my story... I dislocated my shoulder 12/26/16 ripping three of the four RC muscle tendons.  Two of the tendons ripped completely off the head of the humerus requiring surgical reattachment.  I had the repair surgery 1/27/17.  My first PT that I was working with was rough and required to see 2.6 patients every hour per the PT organization he works for...the result is I did not have the best care with this PT, and he ripped one of my repairs off the anchors 5/11/17.  I ended up having to have the re-repair (revision) surgery 6/2/17 to fix the mess caused by the PT.

The 6/2/17 surgery (same surgeon and the surgical team as first surgery) used a double row of anchors this time to reattach the supraspinatus to the humeral head.  The surgery was supposed to last 3 hours...it ended up lasting F I V E hours !!  I started PT with a different PT group affiliated with a local hospital 6/20/17.  My new PT sees only one patient at a time every 45 minutes.  The new PT is gentle, encouraging, explains what she is doing, why she is doing it, and what she feels throughout the session.  She is responsive to my questions and explanations of what it feels like during session or at him.  She uses MMT and massage.  A complete 180-degree change for the other PT.  I am 10 weeks out of the 6/2 surgery.  PAIN-FREE 180 degree passive range of motion, 145-150 degree active rom.  Internal/external rotation is returning quicker now.  No strengthening for two more weeks. My pt is introducing elastic bands and 1 lb wt.

She weaves in brief OT i.e. reaching to shelves and carrying/lifting light weight cups diagonally across my torso, now lifting those cups to shoulder height.

My PT is very very focused on biomechanics, slow and steady, controlled movements.  Drop the shoulders, pinch the shoulder blades together (which pulls your shoulder into anatomical alignment AND takes any pressure off the biceps tendon).  My biceps muscle and deltoid muscle are sore but not painful.  They burn/sear a bit during PT at which point my PT says ok, stop.  Let's review and move to another exercise, or she works manually on the shoulder joint and girdle - gently stretching ligaments.  I see this PT 2x per week.  My first PT had me going 3x per week.  The first one refused to communicate with my surgeon.  The current PT is linked with my surgeon via facilities and EPIC software.  My surgeon can read my current PT notes whenever he wants to read/review them.

Yesterday was the 10 week anniversary of the re-repair.  I have no pain and occasional soreness or discomfort which typically goes away during icing.

I am very happy.  It isn't a fun journey, but I have nothing but praise for the new PT.  The surgeon and his team are excellent.  I am very sorry and sadden to read of your situation and many others who post in the shoulder forum.

What does your doctor offer as next steps??

Too old?  I am 55.  Blah, I do not like Percocet...feels like you stop breathing.  Okay, if you have come to terms with the situation then do the best you can to manage the pain and discomfort.  Don't forget to use ICE a couple of times every day.  GOD BLESS YOU!!

Funny you ask today.  I had a bad night, the pain is also in my other arm.  I went to PT today.  He said I'll take it easy, then proceeded to lift my arm over my head and out.  I tried not to cry like a baby.  Then he put ice and those electrode things on my shoulder.   I guess I'm where I should be, ice is my friend.   Still it hurts.

UGH!!  I am so sorry for your pain.  I am ten weeks from re-repair surgery (yesterday).  Are you and I in the same window?  May I ask a few questions?  UK or USA?  Where are you going for PT?
