more than one Hiatal Hernia surgery

Is there anyone that has had to have a 2nd hiatal hernia surgery?

I had my surgery 2 years ago. It was a very, very, large hernia and I thought it was ok and everything went well. A couple of weeks ago I had a CT scan of the chest area for a different reason and the report mentioned I have a moderate size hiatal hernia. I was not prepared to read this.I have only had a couple of issues since my surgery 2 years ago where food just did not want to go down. I would stop eating and relax, taking deep breaths etc. until I was able to resume eating again. Is it possible the repair came a little undone since it was so large the first time and difficult to repair it. Is it possible to repair this one and be more successful since it is not as large? I am confused at this point.

I had a nissen fundeplication (?) 5 yrs ago and apparently my diaphragm was not very strong. My hernia had returned and an egg-sized portion of my stomach was going up thru my diaphragm. (Chicken egg, btw lol). I am now 4weeks post-op from the repair ( nissen fundo again, but w/ a different surgeon who only does the procedure w/ a robot). The repair also included some kind of mesh applied to my diaphragm for support. I had a two week diet of liquids only and now I'm in the middle of 4 weeks of soft foods ( baby food/ pudding texture). This regime seems much more strict than I remember, as if this doctor wants me to be more gentle with the area and give it a chance to heal better. ???. The recovery process this time was much easier than last time and I think maybe the robot was less traumatic somehow, even though they were both laparoscopic. I've stopped the omeprazole and have no symptoms related to reflux. About 15% of the time I have to take a med in capsule form, it won't go down properly, so I'm trying to be extra cautious w/ them and I'm not taking any of my bigger OTC supplements/vitamins.

Sorry that you're having to go thru this, some of us are just lucky that way. I hope you find the procedure easier this time around as well. All the best.

You say you had a very very large hiatus hernia, can you tell how large is was........the reason i'm asking is they say mine is 37 cm and not really sure how this compares to other peoples.

I want to repeat the question which ozzie123 asked. How large was your hernia. I want to know because my father has been scheduled for a hernia surgery and I want to know if there are any chances of him having to go through all these once again. The reports say that his hernia is about 35cm. Was yours larger than that?

I am not sure how big it was as my tests did not list any numbers. The Dr.s (surgeon) said it was very very  large.  They told me it was one step from huge.  It is a sliding one too where it does go back down.
