Morning problems with reflux

Hi

I am starting to find this problem really hard to deal with - mostly because it is giving me chronic bad breath which I find incredibly embarrassing and difficult.

I take two tablets the GP gave me - 1x am and 1x pm. I get no pain or heartburn but my mouth is always feeling dry and I can feel lumps in my throat - especially in the morning. It’s like lots of ‘stuff’ is just lying there so I assume it came up overnight? My saliva gets very thick and my tongue is always coated in vile stuff

GP fairly useless. I am a bit overweight - nothing much and it’s reducing. I am anorexic so don’t really  eat fat or spicy food at all. I do eat fruit.

Please can anybody give me any advise and help of what this problem is and what else I can do about it? Stupidly it is threatening a relationship as I am so paranoid about my breath.

The first line of advice is to actually raise the head of your bed by 5+ inches. If you don't have the appropriate bed for that, then get some decent pillows and configure until you find a sweet spot. I also keep the radiator completely off during sleeping hours.

When brushing your teeth, brush your tongue. It's weird how brushing the teeth at night (and flossing for bad breath) helps with night time reflux for me, it takes the edge off the reflux.

Maybe purchase DGL and have it before sleep. I always make the intention to have one before sleep but don't.

It will also be beneficial to stay very hydrated during the day.  For me, water helps but so does juices (although you will have to find a low sugar drink for long term I guess).

Thank you so much for the reply. I floss always but usually only brush tongue in the morning. I'll try at night too.

i will google DGL and raise pillows etc. Willing to try anything.

Excellent. I did some research on DGL and it has been shown to be effective. I use the one from Holland and Barrett in UK - I tended to have 2 before each meal rather than 2 a day maximum. I have slowly reduced my dose to 3 a day overall.

I avoid reflux-inducing food like greasy foods, onion.
