Morning swelling 3.5 weeks after facial trauma

Hi guys!

Just before Christmas I had an accident and sustained pretty bad injuries to the entire left side of my face. Half my face was unrecognizable! The Doctors thought it was going to be completely shattered, thankfully it seemed that there may only be a hairline fracture next to my nose/eye socket. It was blurry in the x-ray so they just said to watch for things like double vision.

The healing has been pretty great considering how I started. Bruising is pretty much all gone, some minor yellowing around lower face. Swelling has gone down about 99%, I can still feel a bit of fluid but it's not something you can notice. I had a large hematoma on my front cheek bone that has shrunken so much that it as well is difficult to detect by eye. The subconjunctival hemorrhage in my eye is almost clear. So all in all, it's been a pretty amazing recovery.

So, why I'm here... In the mornings under my left eye is getting swollen. I can physically feel it as soon as I wake up and this morning it was quite noticeable and uncomfortable. Is this normal? It will be 4 weeks since the accident in 3 days.

Thanks in advance for any info you may have!

hello al5571....I wouldn't be too concerned with it if it was me. I mean you move in your sleep and your face is moving around on the pillow, i assume. When an injury is come into contact with something, it isnt uncommon to have swelling occur. I too have a problem with swelling right this moment. I broke my heel when i fell off a roof on Nov. 2nd. I have swelling in my ankle for some reason and ive gone to see my doctor about the swelling, numbness in my foot and discoloration. He pretty much said it was normal and nerve damage is causing all of my symptoms....even though it didnt start til a month after my injury. Now my heel, which is the only break that occurred is healed and the rest of my foot feels like its gonna explodand is still halfway numb inside and out . I hope he knows what he is talking about. He is a foot specialist though and surgeon so i have hope it isnt anything else. So i wouldn't worry about just a lil swelling. I have noticed when i try ti walk, my foot swells uo more afterwards every time and goes down some a lil while after...even though not completely. So it could just be from contact with bed and pillow or something else while you are asleep. If it goes away after a while during the day, id especially not worry. Our bodies just act weird after trauma. It could be your nerves doing a lil of what my foot nerves are doing when i try to walk. If the swelling starts to look infected then id get it looked at but if it goes down during the day then it isnt infected. You aren't alone either way. I so wish the swelling in my foot would go down completely.
