Morphine sulphate

I have been prescribed Morphine sulphate liquid to take when my pain due to osteoarthritis is severe. Fortunately I'm only needing to take it occasionally but I have read on the box that 90 days after opening the bottle the remaining liquid has to be discarded. I know Morphine is a cheap drug to manufacture but it does seem a waste. Does anyone know why this is the case? Does it deteriorate?

    Hi Matron

I diodnt read that.  I take oramorph 5ml every day......not sure how long that lasts??  I'm only guessing because I havent got it here but I would think there was 100ml and at 5mls a day that would be 20 days.

Do you take it less than that.?

I know that I use eye drops and dont need them very often and they have to be discarded.

    Love

I only take it occasionally when I have severe pain so after 90 days there is always some of the medicine left. It states on the box that it has to be discarded after 90 days.

I have used my oramorph for several months after expiry date, and was just as effective , but it never really hits the spot for OA , esp if nerve involvement ,but certainly better than other stuff, although the comparative studies show little difference , I guess each to what suits!

Hope you get some relief , its a vile pain and greatly  underestimated.

Thank you fran. I had to take a dose of Morphine  last night and it was then I read on the box about the 90 days. I had the first dose from this particular bottle in the middle of September and as it was during the night and I was drifting in and out of sleep I wasn't convinced it was very effective. I have a new bottle now so next time I need a dose I'll use that one and see if there's any difference. I'm also prescribed Codeine and Nefopam but as I said previously the Morphine is specifically for severe pain.

I too have been on Oramorph for several years for back pain from prolapsed  and discs that have been removed. I take it as needed and do find that the taste deteriorates as it ages. However, its medicinal effectiveness remains the same.
