Morton's Neuroma

I have just been diagnosed with MN by my Doctor. I suffer numbness of 2nd toes on both feet and have previously had pain when walking, I just made sure I took my shoes off as soon as I got in from work, massaged and soaked my feet. In my job I am on my feet all day and sometimes feel like I will bearly make it home Im in such pain.

My toes are always numb but sometimes the pain can ease for a while and yes this may be because I have found shoes which are more comfortable (I wear low heels) or the fact that I work in school term time and therefore in the holidays Im not on my feet constantly.

The pain feels like I am walking on a small marble sized ball just below my 2nd and 3rd toes and on occasion a stabbing pain which I can only describe as the feeling that I have broken toes. At the minute I am just glad I now know what this condition is and I will continue to try and prevent the painful attacks by making sure my footwear is flatter and broader.

Hi I can feel for you, I have pain in both of my feet and have just been told I have Mortons. We tried the injections but this has made things worse. My husband and I went to the hospital today and have been told it looks like I will nedd surgery. I am now very scared. I have spent a fortune on shoes and insoles to no avail. I love walking but can no longer do much more than the weekly shop. I am also now putting on weight due to lack of walking. Do not give up, your doctors should try to help. I have been on pain killers for nearly 2 years now and have had enough as they are not helping anymore. Please for your own good do not put up with the pain.

I too have suffered foot pain for some time now. I have seen several people from orthopaedic surgeons to podiatrists about this but am still not much wiser as I keep being given different reasons for the pain. As a result of this I am unable to walk for very long, and similar to another post, I can just about manage to do the weekly shop. It initially feels like I am walking on marbles and at its worst it spreads into my second and third toes ending with them going into spasm/cramp, by this time I am unable to walk. At its worst it also stops me from driving.

If I were you I would get tested for diabetes, as sometimes undiagnosed diabetes can cause damage to the peripheral nerves in the feet causing burning tingling and numbness in the feet. If diabetes tests come back as negative ask for an ultrasound scan to exclude capsulitis and Morton's Neuroma and bursa these conditions do not show on x ray. Be warned diagnosing the above is not easy and requires an experienced skilled sonographer, sometimes it can take 20-30 minutes of scanning to pick these conditions up. If Morton’s neuroma is diagnosed you should try orthotics. If orthotics fail check out you options on the NHS website re neuromas @ w ww.nhs.uk/conditions/mortonsneuroma/Pages/Introduction.aspx
