Mother having delusions

For the past few months my mother who has been diagnosed with Bipolar has been hearing things. She claims the neighbours have been calling her mad and harrassing her but every time I hear her shouting out back I hear no reply from anyone. She talks to herself frequently. I'm 17 and have been trying to tell her to talk to someone or get some kind of help and telling her she's having delusions, she won't have any of it. I have no father so there's no other adult in the house for me to talk to in order to help her realise she's unwell.

How can I help her understand that she needs to see the doctor, I've tried to reason with her by saying things like "if you feel you're fine, just get an appointment to ease my mind", she won't accept any of it. I'm doing my A Levels currently but am unable to study as i'm constantly having to tell her to stop shouting out of the window. This used to happen not so frequently but it's now become daily. I don't know what to do or who to call.

any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Hello. I am so sorry you are having this problem.

Unfortunately, there is not much that you can do unless she is a danger to herself or others. It sounds like she is having some psychotic symptoms. Is she on any kind of medication? Is she manic right now?

I would keep an eye on her for when she shifts from manic to depression (if she does), that can cause suicidal thoughts. If she communicates suicidal thoughts then you can admit her to a hospital where she will undergo treatment. But that should be used as a last resort.

    Hi Conrad,

It sounds like you are in the middle of a stressful situation.

Do you have any close relatives you can call on?

Failing that, is there a school counsellor you could talk to?

Your mother pretty definitely needs some sort of help from somewhere.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Best advice: call the NHS hotline, tell them your concerns.
