Mouth ulcers

I stopped smoking just over a year ago and since then I have had constant outbreaks of mouth ulcers, some of them quite large - they are always very very painful especially when eating and drinking or they just sting - it's like chewing hot razer blades!!! They even wake me up in the night because they are stinging!

I have stopped smoking before in the past but after a few weeks I started again because of the ulcers and as soon as I started smoking again the ulcers never came back! This time though I've gone over a year without smoking and I don't want to smoke again but these recurrent mouth ulcers are driving me mad! I went to my doctor a couple of months ago and she had never heard of this happening - she prescribed me with hydrocortisone tablets which she told me to take 4 times a day as soon as I feel a mouth ulcer coming. I still got the ulcers and the tablets stopped them getting worse but they don't prevent them! If I don't take the tablets in time then the ulcers will just get bigger and worse. I have trawled through the internet to look for a prevention of these horrible ulcers but I can't find anything. Even my doctor said I may always get them - annoying when I know I could start smoking again and they will go away!

I definitely don't want to start smoking again.

Does anyone have any advice? (I've tried all the painkilling mouth washes, mouth gels etc etc and nothing eases them - I've tried Bonjela, Anbesol and many others - even tried mouth wash and toothpaste from Holland & Barrett but nothing helps)

Thanks

And in every other respect you are perfectly fine,, no stomach or bowel problems etc question What you do - rather than smoking - is use a low / middle dose nicotine patch smile

Yes, I have no other symptoms. I am using the electric ciggie but it's not that that's causing the ulcers, I packed up smoking 8 years ago for 12 weeks and 11 years ago for 3 weeks before the electric cigs and I still got the mouth ulcers and when I started smoking again on both those occasions the ulcers disappeared. Weird I know smile

One of the toxins in real cigarette smoke must be keeping one of the usually harmless bacteria that live in your mouth in check smile

If it is bacterial then an antibacterial mouthwash is what's required smile

Yes I agree that there is something in cigarette smoke that keeps the ulcers away. I've got a doctor's appointment in a couple of weeks' time to get a second opinion and see if they can do anything else, perhaps some antibiotics might help?

Yes antibiotics may help,, I was thinking maybe give TCP mouthwashes (follow the instructions on the bottle) a try smile It may sting a bit cheesygrin

I'm having the same problem and it started I assume 4 years ago or at least that's the first time I remember seeing a spot on my tongue(no pain). But in the last two  years it appears and disappears regularly at a 2 week interval  let's say, always in the same spots (front, both sides of the tongue) it starts as a white point and then extends to a red spot with a little of pain when eating/drinking.I'm smoking only at social events(parties) and all my blood tests/other health checks point out that I'm healthy with no problems. Anyway this thing bothers me, can it be some kind of herpes??When I went to a doctor with this problem she told me it's a geographical tongue but from what I read online it doesn't seem to be it.Are you suggesting that using mouthwash should solve it??

I was getting mouth ulcers all the time and seemed to get worse when I stopped smoking. I had a huge one on my tongue that has left a scar and was so painful I couldn't eat anything for a week. I had a blood test and everything was fine. The Dr said they had never seen such a big ulcer on the tongue. Please try this it worked for me, I only use Ultradex toothpaste and mouthwash and now I very rarely get any ulcers and I feel there must be something in other toothpastes that irritate my month. The products are expensive but to me they are worth every penny to prevent the misery I used to go through, to stop this horrible painful condition. I hope this helps you as the Drs don't seem to know what causes it.

I'm not a dentist but I have a daughter and husband who are really prone to mouth ulcers. It seems some people just are. My other daughter and I only get them very rarely when we are run down.

Possible causes could be allergies or being run down/lacking in sleep. Sure there are many more causes but those are two of them. My husband also finds that if he damages gum, cheek or lips he will get one.

once you get a mouth ulcer, you'll need some relief from them. There used to be something brilliant in the UK calls Bocasan but it was discontinued here. It's still sold in Australia by oral B apparently but not here. You CAN get it by buying the two components from Bik (think Netherlands) and mixing it. It's a mouth was which greatly relieves the pain. We buy it in bulk and he uses it over the course of a year or so. Also try a different toothpaste. My dentist recommended a certain type of Sensodyne which has resulted in a massive reduction in the amount of ulcers both daughter and husband get . Helped husband more than daughter. We've done an ingredient analysis and can't work out what the difference is between that and other toothpastes but while it works they kep using it....it's the Pronamel one with the GREEN top. No others will do.

    hope this helps.

My ulcers are huge...more like craters. My uvula is gone due to last episode.

For the last 4/5 years I too have suffered from these recurring large mouth ulcers - usually on the tongue or on or around the uvula. None last less than 5 or 6 weeks. I have found that 20mg of Prednisolone for 5 days is very effective in reducing painful inflammation at back of the mouth.

I also gargle with Benzydamine (Difflam) prior to eating meals and usually during the night when I am awkened by the pain.

Despite numerous visits to GP, ENT and Maxillo Facial clinics I don't seem to be any closer to a solution. I am due to see a professor in Oral Medicine at the end of July but the last time I saw him it was on one of those rare occasions that I didn't have an ulcer - his response you don't have any ulcers in your mouth. Needless to say within a week I had two new ones - one on the tip of my tongue and one in front of the uvula.

Some websites suggest B12 but my blood test reveals normal levels. Would taking additional supplements make any difference?
