Mouth Ulcers

Hi,

Has anyone else experienced mouth ulcers since being on prednisolone for PMR. I have had PMR for two years now and I am tapering on the dsns method. So far doing not too badly but have developed annoying and sore ulcers. They do go away eventually but at the moment have a nasty one on the roof of my mouth. GP has prescribed a spray to help with the pain and is also suggesting that after taking my pred I should rinse out my mouth. I would be grateful for any answers and tips with anyone with the same problem

Regards,

Barbara

I get sores all the time too but I have a dry mouth from Sjogren's syndrome so I think my sores are from that but it could be the prednisone or possibly a combination of both. It has been suggested to me that I rinse my mouth out several times a day with some warm salt water. I have to be honest I do not do that and I probably should. Well I'll do it if I have an active sore but I don't really do anything between sores if there is a between. LOL

Thank you. Yes,GP said that after taking prednisolone I should rinse out my mouth which I haven't been doing either. I will give it a try but it is so sore eating and swallowing just now as sore is on the roof of mouth.

I have to agree with Eileen. I just don't see your sores improve just because you rinse your mouth after you take prednisone tablets. I mean you take them with water anyway.

In my case I have asthma so I have to do a steroid inhaler twice a day which is important to rinse after. Plus I take prednisone daily and finally I have Sjogren's syndrome so I have a very dry mouth. And thrush thrives in a very dry mouth. So I am in constant battle keeping the thrush under control.

If you have a dry mouth thrush does not show the typical white splotches in your mouth. I learned this not too long ago and it's very hard to get doctors or dentists who are not familiar with sjogren syndrome to understand that.

One thing you might try even if you don't think you have a dry mouth is to use one of the mouth washes for dry mouth. My thinking is that maybe you don't feel like you have a dry mouth but it is actually a little drier than it should be and that's why you're getting these ulcers. But that's just a thought.

It is unlikely to to be the pred - it is used for conditions causing mouth ulcers. I wonder if your doctor confusing mouth ulcers with thrush which can be caused by steroids, both oral and inhaled for something like asthma where rinsing your mouth would have a beneficial effect.

You might find this discussion useful:

and it might be worth asking your GP if you could try folic acid supplements - as given to expectant mums. It might help the ulcers.

I wonder if these sores are viral. I came down with a doozy after my husband came down with a cold I didn't catch from him. This sounds crazy but brushing the the sores with my toothbrush seems to eliminate them rather quickly. They disappear almost overnight. This has been my experience many times even before PMR/Pred.
