Hi all,

I have spinal stenosis with myelopathy c2 c3 c4 c4 c6 c7 and lumbar spine l4 and l5 which both need operation. I have type 1 diabetes for 27 years and related most of other problems and 5 times unstable angina attacks where I have been admitted to hospital all the times. Total around 5 injections and 28 tablets a day at least for all various health problems diabetic related. Plus painkiller patch and tablets. And three doctors orthopaedic and neuro surgeons in different hospitals refuse to operate on me due to very high risk. Anyone who has the same problems they will understand how painful life is. I am 55 years old and almost on wheelchair. Operation possible but at a cost of being permanently on wheelchair due to paralysis or may lose me on table during anaesthetic due to heart problem as the operation will be 8-10 hours. Screw, metal rod and disc will also be needed during operation so this will lead to an infection due to diabetes. So all the doctors are putting their hands up because I am a high risk factor Can anyone suggest to me what I should do? I am in London and wish to do operation under NHS. Please reply and professional advice will also be much welcomed. Thank you

    Hi,

So sorry you are having such a lot of medical problems complicated with diabetes. I cant imagine how your must be feeling.  I had compression of spinal cord last year + had c 5/c6 fused, anterior aspect. Spec said I needed from c 3 - 6 done but I opted just for the compression to be removed as it was squashing my spinal cord. I live in Australia but as from N Ireland so know about your health system. Have you tried for another opinion? That would give you an idea if someome else has a better idea. Praying for you. big hugs.

Ask your surgeon about fitting a dorsal collum stimulator its great for stimulating your legs and feet plus taking less pain killers in the end,its not a long opp lttle pain and you get over it quite quick,i walked the same day. best of luck.Have you tried lyrica for leg pain and cymbolta very good if they work for you.

Reguster at ADRSupportUK then go to the page for surgeons and I think the list will tell you where to go.  Unfortunately there was one surgeon who was fantastic but has gone private now,.  Its always good to get a second opinion,.sounds as though they are recommending a fusion if they are using rods and screws.  They won't do that operation on me because I have had two unsuccessful ops before by surgeons who didn't know what they were doing.

    Can't help otherwise.
