MRI hip relacement

I'm just wondering if anybody on here as needed an MRI a year or two after hip surgery.   If so, what can it help to reveal? Since my own GP has written a letter to the private surgeon I'm seeing stating that an MRI might be helpful.  He said I may also have a tear  as well as the obvious piece of chipped bone.  It seems to me to be common sense for any new patient because it may show that a total hip replacement isn't necessary and resurfacing less drastic by far...  NB

I had two hip MRIs, both 6 months out of THR. If you have one, make sure it is a MARS (metal artifact reduction sequence) MRI. Takes longer, but the way they take the scans and image them shows more accurage images. The metal implants make the part of the scan where the implants are look a bit wavy, distorting the image somewhat. With MARS, the image is less distorted. You can see LOTS around the implants that is completely UN-distorted. My new orthopedist was able to diagnose my torn gluteal tendons from my second MRI. Keep in mind, though, that my previous orthopedist (the one who did my THR) and both of the radiologists who "interpreted" the two MRIs missed the torn gluteals completely. So much depends on the skill of the person reading the scans.

Oh I've had radiologist reports which totally ignore the truth.  I don't believe they haven't seen it; they don't want to report errors by surgeons from their same Trust.  Trust me I'm not a doctor!

oh and you are right about their interpretation skills;  many are very young and inexperienced.  It's a question of how lucky we get with all the disciplines involved...I still feel violated after 2.1/2 years...

I'm shocked I haven't had post op MRI yet! I am 9 months post op and in extreme pain still yet they just don't do anything except cortisone shots and drug testing. It's a joke over here! I have an appointment with another ortho in a month. I could see him this week but you would have to have gas and endure the 2 hour drive. And I'm broke haha

    Hi NB,

I am not that far post-op yet - what is the reason your GP asked for an MRI?

    Are you in pain?

My surgeon told me that I have Trocharantic Bursitis in my right hip (now also in left) and if it doesn't get better, to come back in 8 weeks for an MRI -

    big warm hug

    renee
