MRI SCAN

Well having been diagnosed with Hiatus Hernia (3cm) my health is now better.  Been to A&E twice with burning pain around right ribs and up back as too painful to lie down.  Feel nauseous most mornings and vomit almost mothly.  no acid reflux and non of usual meds help.  GP thinks it's nothing to do with hernia and has thought gallstones/ gallbladder all along but nothing shows on ultrasound or CT.  Paid to see consultant privately this wee as a one off appointment, as been referred back to Gastro but long wait.  she also says no hernia causing it but not sure what is.  Put me back on NHS list for MRI and I'm terrified as very claustrophobic.  I know you get headphones to dull the noise but I can't even sleep in a small room or one with a sloping roof!!!  The only 2 peope I know who've had one hated it,  One didn't complete the scan and the other took 3 attempts!  I know this is the only thing left to help with a diagnosis so have to do it.  I think you can request sedation so will look into it,  Anyone have any experiences/ ideas please!  not sleeping now with worry but I'm the sort of person that prefers to know all the details to help me cope.  Thanks.

    Hi tracey73301

Without wishing to be rude, it seems to me as if you are being a little paranoid. So you are not happy about being in confined spaces but if it help you - you have to bite the bullet and go with it! After all knowing is better than not knowing?

I have an Hiatus Hernia and prescibed Lansoprazole and get very little discomfort but it does catch me occasionally. I have a far more serious problem of which there is no cure in that I have an IPF and costs the NHS £500 per week in medication but at least it keeps me alive and I am grateful for it.

No hospital treatment is pleasant but if it keep you alive you have to go with it after all - All life is sweet and you're a long time dead!

Just bite the bullet and go with the flow.

    Kind regards

      Hey

I was wondering what you mean by "it does catch me occasionally"? What kind of effects? Thx.

      Hi

Like I say I occasionally get discomfort on my left side underneath my rib cage - that's all nothing sinister. I take Lansoprazole 15mg one capsule per day!

Other than that I don't know it's there.

      Kind regards

Some places do have open MRI machines that are not so in closed.

I have had two mRIs. I close my eyes and go for it. Sometimes the anticipatory fear is worse than the event itself.

    Good luck!!

    Hi Tracy

I suffered with haital hernia for years and the past 3 years I had burning in my back between my shoulders and come to find out , the pain was actually coming from My diaphragm which was repaired when I had the haital hernia surgery 3 weeks ago. I was still having some pain between my shoulders so I asked the doctor and he said it was coming from the diaphragm, it is now getting much better as my diaphragm heals. I had all kinds of test done to find why the pain in my upper back but never found anything. The doctors for some reason don't like the haital surgery, but I have found if you get a doctor that has done many of them is the best way to go. My doctor started treating nausea for the beginning and put me on a liquid diet ,after my 2 week check up I was advanced to a few soft foods until my 6 weeks checkup. You can get info if you just type in Dr Ralph Aye at Swedish hospital in Seattle WA.

I am doing very well except tightness in diaphragm and that is getting better as it heals. May you have success in your journey of research.

    Hi Tracey

I also got on a right panic about having the MRI and it really wasn't too bad. And if st anytime it gets too much you can communicate with the radiographer, so you will be fine. X

I too am claustrophobic, I have just been diagnosed with HH and esophagitis.  Starting PPIs.  It hurts up my front, thhroat and in the back.  At the moment strong smells set the pain off.  I like to use oils in burners but have had to stop.  Not sure if this is chemical sensitivity or the HH or irritated esoph.

I dread the thought of having an MRI.  I got a little panicky with the CT but calmed down.

My husband has had an MRI and said it was fine.  Just put on the headphones.  Yes you can have sedation and I would defo have it.

With my endoscopy I was scared about the camera going down my throat but as soon as I had my sedation I was not bothered and very relaxed.  So have it.  I am not sure but I think I have read somewhere that if you are really scared, you can have someone sit with you.  That would be a great help.

Keep posting, us scaredy cats need reassurance lol.
