Hi Guyscheesygrin

I had a mid toe fusion for arthritis and metal plate inserted in my right foot some 17 months ago.I did have a lot of nerve damage after nerve block used in operation,  having 6 months off work as pain was excruciating when I walked, even when in boot. All healed eventually was advised to use prescribed insoles and only wear solid based shoes( limited selection !!) which I do. Been relatively pain free and able to walk a couple of miles, flatish walking with no problems, other than a weakness there especially when going up and down steps. All went well until yesterday when all of a sudden my foot was exceedingly painful to touch, move orl to put any weight on and depressing the clutch was nightmare on my drive home from work. I rested and hobbled around for the evening. Slightly better today, Doc said he thinks it's muscular and to rest it for a couple of days. Any ideas guys are very welcome.

Rose I also had a mid foot fusion and in my cadehad 2 screws inserted.  I was off workas I could't vwalk for 4 and a half months due to the pain.  My first question is how far e ach day do you walk, or was there a day when you over-dud things.  In my case I was told thbe day of the operation they had gound new areas of Arthritis and even woth the operation they couldnt guarantee wouldn't still bbe left with very limited mobility. I Last October/November i had 2 occasions

Sorry, I was correcting a typo and it sent - my point however is my experience has been, and I was told when we first started discussing mid foot fusion that the more you walk and stand, the more you put stress on the other areas of the foot around the fusion so in time they will go arthritic as well.  In my case, we knew they already had but as I was testing positive for Murker's click and the surgeon didnt know if that would go or not if I went ahead with the fusion, I opted to go ahead and hope it helped.  Murker's click is about 90% improved, and hurts like hell if I stand for over an hour or over-do the walking but I still need the steriod injections to cope on a day to day basis - otherwise walking without this invaluable pain-killer is like walking on a fractured limb last year post op and post-going back to work I have so far had 3 episodes where I physically could not stand or weight bear at all for a day or two.  ironically one of those was where I'd stumbled and bashed my good foot twice in 10 minutes into a solid object, i.e., wooden chest/wall.  I was in so much pain I thought I'd fractured that foot but the x-ray said otherwise and with two feet in excruiating pain, I was grounded, but it turned out I'd bruised the bone so if you've bashed/caught your foot against anything solid rest up and the pain goes it might have been that or as your doctor said musclular.

My advice is ifthe pain doesnt go down, or keeps re-curring if you overdo it, then go back to your surgeon and double-check the arthritis hasnt spread to the surrounding joints

best wishes and I hope you are comfortable soon

Thanks Lorraine. That's very helpful. Yes I was wondering if I'd now got arthritis in other areas of my foot too.
