MS Advice While I Wait

Posted , 3 users are following.

After a month of numb feet, legs, and pelvis, I finally got an MRI.  It showed a lesion consistent with 'inactive' MS (according to the radiologist). I have about 10 days to wait until I can see a neurologist.  The symptoms persist. My question for those who have experienced this: can I expect the numbness to subside if I start meds? Legs are getting weaker and I'm afraid I'll end up unable to walk. I'm 46 and otherwise in good health. Any other advice on how I can live with what feels like stumps for lower legs? Thank you.

    Hi Carl

May I ask you where are the lessions locations in your brain?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The lesion was on spine at T12, the did the scan of my lower back thinking it was a vertebrae or disc issue causing the symptoms.

My MRI reveled several tiny lessions on both of my frontol lobs. But my doctors are not that concerned beacuse they belive migraine can cause the lession as well. I went to nerologyist and he checked in my nerologycal signs and he sat back and told me that my body signs does not Mach the MRI so he kind of dismiss MS. But I'm still worrying about the findings beacuse dr Google says lessions = MS.

So I don't know whom to belive.

Hi Carl. Your symptoms sound very similar to a relapse, like the one that put me in hospital and led to my diagnosis 2 years ago. My MRI showed lesions centred in spine mainly. There are no guarantees about recovery because once the damage is done it is done. That said, the body is very adaptable and can find ways to reroute signals through the nervous system. Could be that once the inflammation subsides you get sensation back. I did and am still able to walk up mountains and do everything I could before the big relapse. Just slight tingles and numbness now and then. Meds don't fix damage, they prevent more. I take supplements: flax seed oil, cod liver oil (and others). There has been some evidence that people taking them accrue less disability. I figured it can't do any harm. Hope it works out ok for you

Thanks Drew, I'll try to stay positive about subsiding of the symptoms.

Also, was there any PT or exercise that helped you? I can live with the numbness as long as I don't lose strength or balance.

There wasn't any PT. Keeping active is the key. I walked off the hospital ward one morning to do a nearby hill and watch the sun come up, just to prove to myself that I still could. As soon as I was discharged I went climbing at a favourite spot, again to prove I still could (although it was a bit scary not feeling my feet and legs). Don't give in to it, keep active. You'll only lose strength if you stop using your muscles. Feeling weakness in your legs is different to actually being weak.
