MTX yay or nay

Koen,

Well what an interesting post you have given, makes me think more about the fact 40% can see real benefits with mtx.

Then again I am on a low dose of Pred. so as suggested by Eileen "if and when it causes side effects, is it worth it for the sake of a few mg."

My better half drinks a low alcoholic beer made here in Oz, Coopers Ultra Light, fermented from malt, hops and yeast, less than 0.5% alc/vol, we can purchase it in our supermarkets, they also sell the German Ultra light beers, all a very good. It would not worry me if I had to stop drinking alcohol, I am only a social drinker.

Thank you Koen1, happy to hear you have had a positive result with mtx.

Did you mean to start a new thread? Or did the site create a new thread on its own - which I suspect does happen now and again...

No Eileen, I don't know what has happened, the site must have created a new, thread itself.

Coopers Ultra Light looks good, Track! In general I don't like the American Lights or Ultralights. It seems that they remove calories by removing all the taste to leave the alcohol and create the typical watery taste.

Much better to remove the calories of the alcohol and leave the taste...

And by the way, it is too early to cry victory. I am feeling better since I started MTX and my health seems to be much better controlled and more robust, but the real challenge is a couple of months out, when I get to below 15mg of pred. That is when every time in the past I got a flare up that I could only finally get under control at 50mg and start over...

koen - can't remember, what is your diagnosis and how long?

After almost a year of slowly worse stiffness and pain in shoulders and back I was diagnosed PMR in July 2016, got gradually worse until in September 2016 I had two episodes with my right eye. The second was darkness for about 5 minutes. Diagnose was changed to GCA. I had all the symptoms, stiffness, headaches, tender scalp, jaw pain, not able to lift my arms, painful hands, fatigue, nightsweat, low fever, but never had high ESR. Did have high CRP, but not after starting pred. Biopsy was negative. Ultrasound negative.

To be honest I think getting stuck at 15mg after less than 2 years may not be unusual. OTOH, I do hope the mtx helps. Though Dasgupta is of the opinion that it only helps in GCA if started right at the start.
