HELP !!! Had a left tkr 9 wks ago and have hit a brick wall, my physiotherapist has informed me that my kneecap isn't moving and its affecting my bend.
She is going to report to my consultant saying she believes I would benefit from an MUA, only problem there is I don't cope well with aneasthetic and I'm dreading it.
Any advice from you lovely people will be a great help x

I feel really sorry for you.you need to get a second opinion away from the brothers. They get an awful lot of money for knee replacement- really they're glorified butchers. I can bend my knee but there feels like a lot of clanking inside the leg at times. Nighttime is the worse.
I had to take morphine last night so this morning I feel really low - one leg is fractionally shorter now but there is no way I'm having the other knee done yet.
I don't trust my consultant but I can't go anywhere else in case they don't match it up properly.
Best of luck anyway xx

After each shower, I strongly massage my knee cap with lotion & make sure it moves. My PT will massage it each way occassionally to make sure it keeps moving. It works for me.
I have been upset about my bend for weeks now & this site suggested that I stop woorying about it. Since taking that advice, I am much happier. I have maybe gained a couple degrees, but still unable to go down stairs properly. I'm working on it daily & am dreading what my Dr may say on Wednesday. What is your bend at this point? I wish you the best!

I've been doing the kneecap massages for the last 3wks as well
as my pt doing it, but it's not working for me that's why they
have suggested the MUA. I always have problems with the
anaesthetic but when I see my consultant on the 22nd if he says
it's the only thing that will help I'm going for it, I haven't been able
to drive since June 2014 and that is my goal to get behind the
wheel again any get some independence back.
Good luck for your doctors visit, keep in touch and let me know
how you get on xx

I was wondering if you kept your own kneecap?
Mine bends but I don't know if it's right- he said after the operation he had left my kneecap.
Any ideas on this??

I understand the feeling you are going through by not driving. I hope you can gain the bend to get back behind the wheel, it's a huge boost! My TKR was on my right knee as well. I'm 46 and work a lot...this has been quite the eye opening experience! I thought I'd fly through recovery, but not the case! I wish you the best of luck! Let me know what they say on the 22nd. I'll keep you posted what I hear next week as well. If I could just go down stairs properly, I'd be content....

What you are going through now is natural and normal and very much early days. It be normal can take up to a year. Sounds a long time, but it's not really. 12 weeks is about the time your joint takes. Think of a broken bone and the healing time necessary. Then add the foreign object and the fact you have come through a major procedure. Do not be in a hurry to recover, you will get there, with determination and lots of patience, without specifically taking time out to exercise, you are able to incorporate your daily life into getting your joint working properly

I had an MUA on both of my knees, as couldn't straighten them after a few months. I did have a general, but you're only out for about 30 mins. Ask if they can do under local...if you are brave enough.
One of my MUAs was successful, and I made good progress from there, the other was not and I had to have the knee opened up again after a year.
I would certainly recommend an MUA though.
