MUA 9 months after TKR seriously concerned

HI all I had my left TKR in march this year. since 5 weeks post op i have only had a rom of 50. my knee is still very swollen and has seized at the back with ARTHFRIBROSIS. After 7 months of badgering my consultant and being sent for second and third opinions ive finally been given a date to go in for an MUA on the 17th December. my consultant told me that because its been so long since the TkR the MUA may not be succesful and there is a danger that something could go badly wrong because of the force needed. i am both angry ( as ive been asking for one since APRIL) and im really anxious because of the possible bad effects. I live alone and dont have family nearby to help if thing go wrong. has anyone on here had a succesful MUA after so long ? and if so what was the recovery like? . i live in the north of england.

Hi Kerrie Just wanted to wish you well and I'm very sorry to hear your difficult experience with TKR. I had a different experience in that I did get an MUA at 10 weeks as my bend regressed to 65 deg. It was successful for the bend improving, though my knee has had a very slow recovery and I had scar tissue and still some issues.

I can't imagine why you have never been offered one before, especially having had second and third opinions, unless there was some underlying reason for their reluctance?

I've belonged to several different online knee surgery groups and I think I recall people having an MUA further on though I know it is supposed to be most effective in the early days, if possible. Sorry that I cannot be any more helpful. Can you speak to the PALS office at your hospital to get advice on the situation, as it sounds like you have not received the best treatment or outcomes? Good luck to you.

I'm so sorry for discomfort. I had an MUA after 4 months and it did help a lot. I had no real pain, but you you need to exercise it to keep the ROM. I'm not sure what will take place after so much time. I was told you only have a certain window so I pushed my doctor to do it. To be honest that same knee still doesn't have a great ROM and swells often.

    Good luck to you.

Kerrie, you will be fine, if your surgeon is competent. I had a manipulation a month ago, and I was 8 months post op. He also did arthoscopic surgery to get the scar tissue...... I did fine, and I am fine now. I finally pushed past 120 ROM, which I never would have gotten if I had not had the manipulation. And the pain afterwards is not as bad as the pain after the TKR..... Like I said, IF the doctor is competent. Make sure he has done lots of manipulations before,. My doctor said he tried to bend my leg, before he got all of the scar tissue out, and HE COULD NOT. that's the only problem I see with your manipulation. Maybe the surgeon should do the arthoscopic (darn, can't remember the proper medical term for what it s called), but if the scar tissue stays in there, a manipulation won't do much good. All that does is break it up, which can work or not work. Good luck . sorry you are alone during all of this.....

Well I do hope it works for you. They don't seem to like doing it in the UK for some reason. I only ever got 85 deg with my first TKR which keeps life difficult with sitting, standing and stairs. So I was on the ROM case from the word go with the second one but all you ever get from the physios and consultants is it will come with time when the swelling goes and with exercise. Well it doesn't for everyone and I've only got a hard won 95 deg with the second one. I enquired about MUA and they said it was too late and probably wouldn't work. But to cheer you up I suspect yours will improve with time and the MUA might work.
