Mua on Tuesday

I've read everything I can  to get  as much information as possible as I'm having both shoulders manipulated at the same time on Tuesday having suffered severe pain for months despite having months of deep tissue massage every week -I think it's just about kept me mobile as I'm a tennis coach and have found swinging a tennis  racket for sometimes 6hrs a day excruciating  that all consuming numbing pain when my shoulders are jarred or just over reaching even dressing myself is agony now...

can anyone tell me what the signs are that it's becoming more manageable and less painful as I need to be back at work within 10days.

its been such a help reading about everyone's different experiences with this agonising condition as not many people believe or can imagine what this is like to live with this 24hrs a day even my daughter thinks I'm exaggerateing. Anything anyone can tell me is gratefully received

Hi Jenny. I had one MUA two years ago. I was warned that it would be painful on waking from the anaesthetic and they weren't wrong! However, I could move my arm right up above my head - something I had been unable to do for months. You will have to persevere with exercises and physiotherapy to maintain the movement and you will certainly need painkillers to help with this. I improved quite quickly and even felt completely recovered within a couple of months apart from some muscle weakness because I had been unable to use my arm for so long. I think that expecting to return to tennis coaching within 10 days is way too optimistic and I would take your doctor's advice on whether you should put yourself under so much strain so soon. I wish you lots of luck with the MUA. Having both shoulders done simultaneously sounds like a nightmare so I really hope you get better quickly and get back to living a normal life again soon. I have suffered frozen shoulder on both sides but not together but have been well since my MUA in June 2012. I hope the same goes for you!

Thanks Judyb really helpful advise loaded up with painkillers etc,.i don't have a choice about returning to work as I'm self employed will just have to take it easy as long as I can hold a racket and carry a ball basket should be able to blag it!

when does the pain diminish is it gradual or do you just become aware your not in pain anymore as at the moment even with 3 co codomol I sleep for a few hours  then spend the rest of the night trying to get comfortable....I also feel that I have a hangover all day.

As no one can see the injury ie: if you had your arm in plaster you'd get some support think FS is way more painful but invisible....

one last thing I'm really desperate to get my arm up behind my back as it's  an important part of the service action does that return quickly do you know?

Hi Jenny. I understand your predicament with work etc but go easy. There's no quick fix and from what I've read on these forums everybody's experiences are different anyway. You don't want to do yourself more damage though so I really would take advice from the physio you SHOULD be given after the op. I was lucky, I had really good physio. As I said before, the range of movement was drastically better immediately after the op but putting my arm behind my back was the last thing to return. I had a pulley which I hung on a door and this enabled me to pull my bad arm up using my good arm so I stretched it slowly and carefully several times a day. I'd ask whether pushing it too much could send it back into being frozen. You really don't want that to happen. Fingers crossed you are fit so will recover quickly.
