Muscle mass loss and other symptoms

Hi all,

My symptoms started with noticing my legs shaking when going downstairs and perceived weakness on the left side of my body. This got worse which prompted me to visit my GP. The GP undertook various checks on my reflexes and muscle strength and also noted that I had a high frequency tremor of outstretched hands. He was not overly concerned with any of his findings but referred me to a neurologist to check the tremor and I am waiting for the appointment which is over 4 months away.

A week after I had an incident after walking to my place of work (about 2 miles) which resulted in me having crazy body shakes and difficulty walking - I found it incredibly difficult to put one foot in front of the other. I was immediately sent to the local hospital for evaluation and after standard neurological checks (normal plantar reflexes, no clinical weakness but brisk reflexes throughout) and normal blood checks they told me I had essential tremor (beta blockers prescribed) and was likely having a panic attack. I was scheduled for a Brain MRI (which came back normal) and discharged.

I have subsequently developed twitching all over my body and have lost significant weight and muscle mass (confirmed by smart scales and visually). My muscles in my legs and arms as well as my neck are visibly shrinking, I have tightness in my muscles and a little pain but not bad pain. I am lost as to what is happening to me and I am finding walking any distance exhausts my muscles and me in general. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like you definitely need to see a Neuro ASAP. Call some other Neuros around town to get in sooner. Any time you lose muscle mass and weight so rapidly its concerning. You will need EMG and a head MRI to check for MS or ALS. I hate to say those words even, but you need to rule it out. There are a number of conditions that can cause muscle loss, GPS, CIDP, ALS, MS, the list goes on. I would get in as soon as possible. The ER cant help you, you need a Neuro to take a look. 4 Months is too far away...

Call your GP and ask the practice to call neurologist.

You must stress how much this problem is affecting you. Be firm.

    It will be sorted out.

I wish you the best of luck.
