Muscle relaxers for spasm

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi All: Has anyone used a muscle relaxer with good results for those spasms that many of us have discussed ? I am experiencing tightness and discomfort on the back of my upper thigh. It's not excruciating and I don't want to go back to any narcotic pain relief.  I'd appreciate feedback to know if others have tried this and with what results. Thanks dear friends. Cindy

I have used them for spasms on my thigh and calf.  They do work for me, but we're all different.  I hope you get relief!

I haven't used them as I was conscious that most include asa or acetominophen and taking them meant forgoing some of my pain relief. But next time around , if still getting the leg crawlies I will consider how to work these into the night meds.

Generally speaking, I worry that we don't pay even atention to the safe maximum doses for the pain meds we take. This is more challenging for me because I am allergic to Asa and related anti-inflammatory especially so I have fewer pathways at hand to use.

So ... I believe you should try the muscle relaxers, but be careful to check when also using pain relievers at the same time. It is easy for them to tip you over the safe single dose limits and tis risks damage to your liver and/or kidneys.

I would love to hear whether these help.

I hope your recovery accelerates soon for you.

My Dr. Put me on flexeril 5 mg for muscle spasm about 2 weeks post op bc I didnt want to take the heavy narc. So I took Advil 600 mg and the flexeril at night so I could sleep bc the spasm was worst at night .Im 31 days out now and I havent needed the flexeril for a couple of days ..In the beginning I would go crazy it was from the back of my hip down to my knee ...and I would jump up as best as I could to try to relieve the spasm ......Good luck with ur recovery ...I keep telling my self all of this pain well be worth it in the end

      Hi Bonnie,

I think it is worth it. I am 6 weeks and feeling so much beter, rarely take my cane with me anywhere unless I've had a really bad day and only use my walker for long days on my feet (eg, full day conference last week and long commute home).

Sure I still have stiffness (waking, after sitting or standing for extended periods or overdoing it in the garden. But, I can walk tall and straight without the bone on bone pain hitting me regularly and I am (mostly) independent and looking forward to completing the journey with my second hip. I feel VERY optimistic about a successful and independent outcome for both hips.

Don't give up .... the days ahead are much brighter.

      Hugs,

      Linda

      Hi Linda

This is my second thr I had my right hip done 7 months ago it was the best experience no pain in hip only the knee for the first week. I even went back to work and was driving in 6 weeks now this left hip surgery was the worst I still have pain and also my left hip is a inch taller then the right which I think is the cause of my pain bc its a different kind of pain .My dr also had to remove pins ( 4 ) in both hips bc I had hip dysplasia I had these pins in place for 42 plus yrs . One of the pins has broke and is still in my left hip he couldnt remove it without giving me a fracture...I just so glad my right hip was done first bc I dont think i would of gotten the left hip done ...Im just taking it day by day with the left hip. Im just thankful the pain is nothing like before and for the first time in 40 plus yrs I been pain free in right hip...And thanks for encouraging words. And wish you luck with the next hip......

Oh Bonnie - you really have had a tough time of it for a long time. I am sorry and I hope my earlier replies did not sound unfeeling.

The broken pin must really be discouraging. Is there any hope that you will get past this horrible pain?

Wishing I could wave some form of magical wand for so many forum members who are struggling with multiple hip issues and are so discouraged by complications.

Unfortunately the best I can do is hugs and moral support.
