Muscle Spasms

I was diagnosed in May of this year.  Back in Febuary when the symptoms developed, I started having horrible muscle spasms from my feet to my hips.  Sometimes they are so sever I can't walk, can't stand up.  Can take up to 20 min. before I get the muscles to release.  Pain is excruciating.  Is this common?  I have been taking extra magnesium and eating a couple of bananas a day for the potassium.  Helps some.

Hi Joyce, yes I went through a stage of excruciating pain in my glutes and hips when i was first diagnosed. I believe it was associated with trapped nerves in my spine as I have OA. Getting out of bed was a nightmare and moving around equally difficult. I went to a physio and had accupuncture on a fairly regular basis in areas of my back, glutes and legs where the physio detected the muscles were very tense and tight causing this horrific pain. I did find that it helped me. Yours sounds a little like cramps? Good luck.

Further to Loulie's comment, I've had "dry needling" to alleviate very tight muscles along either side of my spine.  I wasn't aware I had this, the physiotherapist found them.  But I have to say since that treatment I have far fewer episodes of back or hip pain.  So, as Loulie says, treatment like acupuncture or dry needling could possibly be helpful to you.  Last winter I often lay on a very hot hot water bottel (well wrapped up) and that also seemed to relax tight muscles.  Too hot to carry on during warm weather. wink

Yes, to be accurate mine was 'dry needling' too. I could certainly tell when my physio found these tight muscles, as he would press on them and it was very painful. The needling certainly seemed to relax them, and the following day, I felt the benefit. Also, like you I did the wrapped hot water bottle in strategic places and it also helped a lot.

I was diagnosed a year before you and have the excruciating muscle spasms sometimes too. Magnesium and bananas have not  helped, but I have discovered that a heat bag (hot water bottle or wheat bag) , can almost instantly help the muscles relax.

That was my pain exactly when I was diagnosed in December 2015. Feet, legs, hips, glutes. Also my hands. I could barely walk and knew something was wrong. It had been going on for several weeks before I saw my primary care dr. After doing bloodwork I was sent to a rheumatologist because my inflammation markers were high. That's when I was diagnosed with pmr. Recently reduced to 2.5 mgs prednisone but it's not doing the trick anymore. Bad feet, hip and glute pain again. Ugh!
