Muscle spasms

I’m 6 days post on my second THR. Has anyone experienced muscle spasms in the thigh? I don’t recall having them when I had my first HR last year.

I am 12 weeks out, and every morning I wake up early in bed and do this weird automatic body stretch??? Like full body yawning, When I do my leg with new hip starts to shake instead of stretch like other leg. I also get this weird feeling of bubbles popping deep in my but, I am told these are muscle spasms that could last 6-12 months. They don't hurt, just strange

Could be back related. If it persists I would visit a chiropractor, not a McTimoney one or an osteopath.

I had muscle spasms and cramps at night, it's not not that uncommon.  I never found a 'cure', it only lasted a few days, but was quite uncomfortable.

      Dear Graham

For cramps a very quick cure is to drink a glass of tonic water that contains Quinine. I find that it works within a couple of hours. An alternative is to take one 300mg quinine tablet an hour or so before going to bed.

For jerking legs I have found that one 100mg of Magnesium Citrate works for me and I take this in the evening. The normal dose is higher so I've kept it just enough to do the job.

      Hope this helps someone.

      Cheers Richard

Yes indeed!! The physical therapist suggested a rolling pin it was amazing still works. I've had both hips replaced this year left in May and the right in August. It's the best thing I could have done for myself. Still recovering but I am enjoying life pain free. God's blessings to you! Teresa

I had them for about two to three weeks along with an ache across the thigh. I don't think it is that unusual.

Yes, I was told by PT they are totally normal.  I got them really bad about day 10.  The pain was terrible but went away.  I started drinking a Gatorade every day- the minerals and electrolytes really help w muscle cramps.  Luckily I didn’t have to take the meds they gave me for cramping.  They are really strong.

Stretching, gently, before you go to bed and again when you wake up, go at it slowly, just like Chuck said, a full body yawn, toes pointed and push as far as you can down the bed, nurses told me about this the morning after surgery, it worked for me, but again gently, don't go at it too fast, you may cause spasms.

    Sorry normal i'm afraid.

    Hi Dsilk05,

Yes I experienced this too, just after my first THR (second is on the horizon) while still in hospital. Reported this to nurses and a doctor came but just shrugged shoulders so no enlightenment there at the time. Apparently this phenomena is not uncommon. The unpleasant feeling continued for a few weeks after the op, especially in the mornings during a stretch just like someone already posted, then disappeared. I think it's just the muscles trying to settle and not harmful. Be patient, it will go away in time, nothing to worry about.

    Best regards,

    Alison

I had painful spasms in groin and was prescribed Baclofen, a muscle relaxant.  It worked after a few weeks on the spasms.
