Muscle twitch and anxiety

Hi there

Wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to me.

I have been experiencing muscle twitches and anxiety for several months now. First had some tingling in my leg which pretty much went away but now I have constant muscle twitches and have been distraught with anxiety at times over it. My doctor diagnosed anxiety and I have been taking citalopram for almost 4 weeks. First week I was on a half tab and felt ok except for some dizziness and yawning but since I went to the full tab have been feeling very fatigued tired muscles etc which is not helping the anxiety with the twitches. Periodically convinced I have something really serious. I am trying to do a lot of exercise to reassure myself that my limbs are working fine and to improve my mood but not seeing any lasting benefits of that. Hoping the ssris will help but so far they haven't really.

Hello Joanne, I have been suffering with health anxiety for 6 years now and can tell you that I experience tingling in my leg and ankle, and muscle spasms and twitches whenever my anxiety gets really bad. When it first started to happen I naturally convinced myself it was something serious, but as time has gone on I have come to realise that it really is only a symptom of my anxiety. I don't have any experience of taking medication for anxiety, but maybe you need to take it for a bit longer before you will start to see any benefits? I find that constantly focusing on the twitching just makes it worse, and I know it's easier said than done, but try to keep busy and keep exercising and focus your mind away from the twitches. I wish you well.

Thank you very much Tracy, it's reassuring to hear someone else has experienced similar symptoms. Yes they do seem worse when I don't distractions, e.g. in the morning travelling to work, sitting at my desk, lying in bed. Thanks for the advice

Thanks for your response Rachel, yes I am hoping to feel the benefit of the medication soon. I mainly suffer from health anxiety but it extends to others as well as myself. My husband has been diagnosed with a cardiac condition and I have been very worried about him too so that might be adding to it
