Muscle twitches and spasms all over body

This particular problem started about 5 years ago, however it was much more mild and not as worrying. The muscle twitches originally started in my feet and legs, and was more of an annoyance than anything. At the time I also had trouble sleeping, so my doctor suggested a sleep study, perhaps the twitching was causing my body to not fully fall asleep. However, the sleep study did not show any abnormalities in my sleep pattern. The twitching eventually subsided/became less noticeable, and I forgot about it.

In the last 30-45 days or so, however, I have noticed the twitching both returning and being much more frequent, and also accompanied by muscle spasms as well. The twitching occurs all over my body, including; feet, ankles, calves, thighs, knees, glutes, wrists, fingers, elbow muscles, and biceps. The muscle spasms have only occured in my thighs, calves, and glutes and are not as common. The spasms are very rapid and only last for a few seconds.

I decided to keep track of the frequency of the twitching for a 5 minute span (both laying down and in a sitting position) and it occured around 8-10 times within 5 minutes (varying from fingers, glutes, thighs, calves, etc). I am worried that these symptoms may lead to something greater, as I am only 20 years old and am not sure if it will become worse as time progresses.

I should also mention that I am prescribed 150 mg Wellbutrin and birth control daily, and have also been taking painkillers as needed for the past few weeks due to surgery. I also suffer from mild-moderate anxiety. I do not believe that this is a side-effect from my medication, as I have been on these medications the past few years. I am not opposed to visiting the doctor, I just don't know if a specific doctor would be necessary or any other advice would be helpful.

I found this discussion while searching my symptoms as I too have these muscle twitches. Mine happen mostly at night while I’m laying down but they do happen during the day sometimes as well. My whole body  twitches to where it feels like I am vibrating and also my face is numb and tingly and I’ll get these cold numb spots in my thighs and in my chest and in my back sometimes.  I have been diagnosed with degenerative spine so I assume that I have some nerve damage going on on but I am hoping I don’t have an underlying condition.

How long have Your symptoms been going on?

Hey all, so I've had similar problems and found a solution. It took me almost 2 years to find. I have also had twitches all over my body, my face, my knees, my arms, my legs, my fingers, you name it. I would also have other things going on, but the twitching is what I worked so hard to figure out why so I could resolve it. I went to multiple specialists, neurologists, cardiologist, rheumatologist, eye surgery specialist, 5he list goes on and on, they all said I had anxiety and take Zoloft and you would be fine. Anyway, for two years I worked on recording everything I did all day long, everything I ate. I cut out two very toxic foods, wheat/gluten and dairy (Including milk, cheese, yogurt). Anything with wheat, gluten, milk and dairy, completely eliminated. Within 48 hours, my muscles twitches significantly were reduced and continued to get better and better each day over the next 4 months. Sometimes I would accidently (or on purpose as a cheat day) eat dairy or gluten and I would definitely feel it the next day. Usually there is a 8 to 16 hour delay on feeling it affecting your body. You can Google or YouTube Dairy (cows milk) and see all of the horrible things it does to your body and stuff I never knew! I always drank milk and have switched to almond milk, I always had cheese on e erything I ate, and switched to nondairy cheese, I LOVED dairy. But as I researched it more and more after it not only made me feel really good for once in my life, I felt normal again, it I found how toxic dairy is to your body. Anyway, there's my story (really the condensed version) it good luck to everyone and I hope you are able to eliminate those foods for a week or two and give it a try yourself!

I am 19 years old and have had these spasms and twitches for about a year and a half now. Have had plenty of blood tests ekgs and MRI's done and everything has come back normal. I do have mild anxiety and have a poor diet. I am considered to be overweight as well. All of the doctors that I have visited have said everything is fine but I do not understand why I would continue to feel this way. Have looked online and have seen that this could be a vitamin deficiency of B12 and/or Magnesium. Have been taking those for about a month. Helped a bit but just recently came back full throttle. If anyone has any more info, please let me know. Im getting very worried and more anxious but I am continuing to pray and have faith that this will leave me and you all as well.

Remove all dairy and gluten from your diet and you should see it all disappear. No cheese, no milk, no cookies, no cake. Almond milk and gluten free products will become your best friend. Dairy and gluten are very toxic to human bodies, give it a try for 10 weeks, don't cheat, you will see. Good luck, it won't be easy.

Hi. I know I'm a little late to this discussion but a couple of months ago my right eye started twitching and it went on almost constantly. Then my right leg started twitching and spasming. Eventually it moved into the other eye and leg and now is all over my body. I have been to a few doctors and am scheduled to see a neurologist next month.

In the meantime my primary doctor sent me for blood work and she found i am very deficient in Vitamin B12. She said that will cause twitching and spasms because B12 helps to keep nerves healthy.

She has started me on 1000 mcg's and will retest in 2 months. If levels haven't gone up they are going to do injections.

I wanted to share this so if you haven't been tested for vitamin and mineral deficiencies may be a good thing to check out.

I hope this helps you all and me also.

Thank goodness I found this forum! I am having the same symptoms and have been racking my brain trying to figure out what it is. I still don’t know.

A bit of background about me I guess. I am 23 year old male, 40 lbs overweight, pretty bad diet up until now. I had neck pain one day and then all of a sudden, it traveled to my right shoulder blade and the pulsing/spasms began. Most of my early spasms occurred on my upper right chest and right arm. So I thought it was my heart or coronary arteries spasms. But now it is all over my body. Left arm, jaw, thighs, calves, abdomen, etc. The spasms stop when I begin to do exercise. But they come back again when I am at rest. Most noticeably when I am sitting or laying down.

I went to the doctor and my blood pressure was normal. However, since I have government insurance and am switching doctors, I have to wait till August 1st to get any blood tests done. I am so anxious to do so because this is worrisome. I can’t tell if these are muscle spasms or vein spasms or what. As of now though, I am exercising and changing my diet drastically. If I see results, I will report.

I just hope it isn’t something serious like an impending heart attack or a neurological issue. I am expecting symptoms of a heart attack all day. I have generalized anxiety and it makes the symptoms worse I suppose. I am constantly putting my hand on the spasms to try to feel them. I wonder if stress did trigger this. Since I am a pretty anxious person and I am starting a new full time job, I wonder if my nerves got the best of me.

Including myself, I have talked to so many different people that has been able to resolve their muscle twitching and fatigue and neurological issues by changing their diet and removing food sensitivities that they never even knew they had. Gluten and dairy and about a dozen other types of things such as sesame, can cause horrible neurological symptoms such as twitching. The kind of twitching that is all over your body from your face to your toes. The first thing you would want to do is to order an everlywell food sensitivity test, and then start removing some of the foods that your body is having a hard time processing. The antibodies are detecting these foods and thinking that they are foreign Invaders, however your body also sees these types of food proteins has neurological tissues and that is why you get some of the neurological symptoms. Another benefit to identifying your food sensitivities besides eliminating the twitching, is that you will become much healthier and lose excess weight. It may be the best decision you've ever made in your life!

Something to consider, you may want to get a celiac blood panel done as well as getting a hair analysis sample done to get a view of metal toxicity or vitamin mineral defeciencies

Yes I plan on doing that very soon. But I have been taking the magnesium and b12 for about 2 months now and I have experienced great results. The twitching does not happen almost at all now. I may feel it from time to time when I’ve been up and active all day and then I lay down at night, but other than that, there have been immediate and great results from the vitamins I have been taking. Thank you for your response.

    Hi Rsarah,

I am also going through something kind of similar as you. I'm 29 years old and have had what I refer to as twitching/pulsing in my body for a couple of years now. It started just in my calves but now I can feel the twitching around my face at times, my glutes, near my ankle and even in my stomach area. The place I'm affected the most is definitely my calves specifically my right side.

I've been to neurologists in my area who have done every test possible and they have all come back negative. I also have diabetes and have been put on gabepentin/lyrica with no change in the twitching. I've been on magnesium pills and again no change. They have done blood tests for B12 and that came back fine as well. I've had an MRI done of my lower back and that came back fine too.

I'm trying to stay positive but it can be very hard. Especially since all the tests I've done come back normal but I know something is wrong.

This twitching/pulsing feeling I get can also create a cramp type feeling in my calves. I actually have problems walking as well because the twitches will happen when I'm moving. I've tried stepping through the twitch as its occurring but that can be painful. I normally need to stop in my tracks and have the twitch go through its course before I'm able to walk again.

The job I have is a desk job and another thing that has happened recently with me is if I sit for a period of time my legs can get pretty stiff. They feel heavy and full like they cant relax. This feeling doesn't happen all the time but it comes and goes and isn't very pleasant. I try to get up and move around for 10 minutes every couple hours and have also had a standing desk put in at my work to see If that can help.

The neurologists have now referred me to see a Physical Therapist since no tests came back showing it has anything to do with my nerves. This just worries me and I hope some day I'll find a solution to at least help my quality of life.

Have they done a brain MRI? After 8 months of syptoms and a ton of tests/bloodwork I BEGGED my husbands Dr to order him a MRI of the brain and it came back that he has ALS. Im not saying this is something you have and i dont mean to scare yiu but sometimes you have to push Dr's for additional exams. I hope you find answers. Good luck

I hope I can find answers too. I have not had a Brain MRI done I only had an MRI was done of my lower back. ALS was a thought of mine too but I have been having these problems for awhile (more than 7 years ) and If it was ALS I was thinking it would have progressed faster. Thank you for replying I appreciate any help or advice I can get.

Did he only have muscle spasms as a symptom? Was it progressing? There are some very interesting studies on cholinesterase or peptides right now. Might want to look that up.

Don't know if you've found a solution, but absolutely try calcium - especially if it (paradoxically) gets worse after taking magnesium.

I went for years without a solution and then discovered magnesium intake (through supplements or food) was actually pushing calcium out of my system, which, like magnesium, also causes twitching symptoms when you're deficient.
