Muscle weakness in arms and shoulders

I've been on Prednisone for 3.5 years for PMR and in the last several months have been experiencing increasing discomfor and weakness in my upper arms and shoulders. The last few days the left arm has gone very weak and is hard to lift. Is all of this a result of PMR and being on Prednisone this length of time? I recently tried laser therapy on my shoulder but that made it worse. I've tried a bit of physiotherapy to keep up the range of movement and strength but this can also easily aggravate it. Does anyone have any experience or advice here? I'm on about 8 mg of Prednisone right now. My doctor is unsure of what to do as is my rheumatologist other than putting me on another medication which I don't won't to take. I also tried 'essential oils' the last few weeks which may have lessened the discomfor but overall the condition continues to get worse.

YES, MUSCLE WEAKNESS IN SHOULDERS AND ARMS. For what it's worth, like you I have been on Pred for 3.5 years finally down to 1.5 but if I go down to 1 mg I lose it, awful neck pain. I am desperate to come off Pred. I have a new Rheumy who has put me on 7.5 mgs of MOBIC (Meloxicam generic) which is a NSAID like Advil, only by prescription - it supposedly has less side effects that Advil. He thinks that I can wean myself off Prednisone this way. My hair is thin, my blood sugar is slightly elevated, I am cranky, my skin is bruised and thin, sleep problems and I have neuropathy so of course I want to come off it! I have been taking MOBIC for a week, one 7.5 mgs per day and will hold at 1.5 on Pred for another 4 weeks and then try for 1mg. So far so good, some days better than others..... BTW I am 74 years old lead a hiking group in Laguna Beach, up hill and down dale, 3 x per week, about 3-5 miles each time. Pain in my neck, shoulders and arms continues but Dr tells me that my blood results show I DO NOT HAVE PMR any more, but a lot arthritis... So I have decided to give this a chance. My goal is to come off Prednisone. Oh and I do take a massage once per week to relax me which helps for the day...Pred is a wonder drug but if you do not have PMR then you should think again about being on it....My Rheumy says they are seeing patients who have been on steroids for a long time have residual pain even without inflammation, they call it a pain syndrome which can be worse than the real thing. Next week I go to a pain clinic to be evaluated in a class... Deep Breathing, Yoga, and other stuff... BTW I have had acupuncture for a year and done yoga to no avail...Good luck I know how you feel and please do consider coming v slowly down from 8 mgs. Thanks,

As far as I know, and according to experienced people who post here, no blood test can tell you whether you have or do not have PMR. Blood tests can measure the inflammation in your body at that moment, and that can be caused by many different things, and some people with PMR never have raised inflammation markers. In my case I did, but they were, according to the doctor, considered normal for my age.
And of course you shouldn't have inflammation showing up in your blood tests if you've been on pred and it's doing its job!

Your blood tests may be "in normal range" - but if you are still on pred that does not in any way mean that the PMR is gone. What it means is that your inflammation is well managed in the current dose of pred. No-one can tell PMR is gone until the patient is off pred and symptom-free.
I keep hearing new bits of lore from rheumies that bear no resemblance of the reality I meet - I have not yet met anyone who, once they were properly off pred had any residual pain, it took them a long time to get back to their former level of fitness, even taking being older into account but that isn't the same. Patients who have been on pred and developed steroid induced myopathy are likely to have muscle pain - but that isn't a "pain syndrome".
And if I was on 1-1.5mg pred - I'd rather that than be on meloxicam or any other NSAID.
