My 11 year old son is recovering from surgery to treat sufe in his right hip 6 weeks ago.He only had his symptoms for just over a week,we thought he had pulled a thigh muscle. However the pain got worse and by the end of the week he was struggling to weight bear.I phoned casualty at our nearest childrens hospital for advice and they immediatly said this condition was a possibility and to bring him in straight away.It turned out that it was a slip but fortunately as it had been caught quickly it was mild with good prognosis following surgery. He was in for 4 days and came home with crutches and encouraged to weight bear.He has done really well and in fact by week two he was in the water on holiday and in fact i struggle to get him to take things easy. When he is sitting down watching t.v he said his leg goes dead sometimes. This worries me especially as i know one of the side effects can be poor blood supply to the joint.I would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this.Just to add to the worry he phoned and asked me to pick him up when he was out on his bike as he was getting pains in his left thigh and groin.I am trying not to do the panicky mother thing and hoping it is just muscular this time.

It has been super to read all the experiences on this site as i,ve not met anyone else who has had this condition.NB

Hi, my comments are just below yourself. I think what you are worrying about is what my daughter has, Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head, it`s when the pin hits a blood vessel and the surrounding bone crumbles and dies. We are told this is a rare complication, but it has devasting results. As for the pain in the `good` hip ,we were told it is because it has to over compansate for the `bad` hip. Hope your son get on well, don`t worry to much, it took about a year after my daughters first operation for this condition to show.Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. In fact the "dead leg seems to have settled",fingers crossed and i think the pain in his other hip is ,as you suggest probrably becuase it is compensating for the other as it has subsided too.Otherwise he is recovering well.

I,m sorry this has happened to your daughter and wish her the best of luck in her recovery.

Hi, my son who is 11 had the operation on Saturday. He had less than a 10% slip. The first xray taken in July did not pick up the slip however, we insisted he had a MRI scan.He was released from hospital the next day and is walking better than before. He is weight bearing already and not complaining about pain. I am worried he is putting too much weight on the leg. He does not seem to need his cruches. When did your son go back to playing sport and is he ok now.

    Thanks

I,m glad your son is making a quick recovery. It is now about 8-9 weeks since my sons surgery. He is walking almost normally now, just a slight limp when he,s tired. He,s swimming and cycling but not allowed to do any contact sports yet which he,s finding difficult as he feels fine.Like yiu i hacve to remind him to be careful and not do to much. Hope your son continues recovering well.

    Thanks

I am amazed that you have been allowed to be so active after such a short period after your op,s. Sophie had her op in May after a slight sufe. For the first six weeks she wasn,t allowed to weight bear at all then on the six week follow up she was told to part weight bear with both crutches. On the next six week follow she was advised to part weight bear for another two weeks and then go on to one crutch and try her full weight with support. She is now walking without her crutches fine and is due her next six week follow up on the 13th of september. I asked the consultant about swimming half way through her recovery as she was getting really bored but he advised us not to incase she slipped in the pool. She is not allowed to do any impact sports at all or ride her bike yet!

Wow! I am also amazed how soon you were back on your feet! ... well, after havin my hip pinned, I was out of action for like 8 weeks, and struggled to walk far without my crutches, so ive been on them relatively for around 2 years now. But the more serious op, I was up and about at around 4 weeks of my crutches here and there, even though i wasnt supposed to hehe! Now i still use them for school and when I go out.smile get well soon, x x x
