Try not to worry, I know that will be hard for you because you’re a parent, but any discomfort that comes with gallbladder removal goes away within a month or two. Just watch what he eats for a while and get some exercise in soon after surgery, his stomach will feel sore but the more he moves the quicker the recovery. He’ll most likely always get some form of nausea at first, but very little, and there will be a lot of food intolerance, which can cause diarrhea. The best of luck to your son, and god bless.

It must be a worrying time for you right now. Often the worry is far worse when you are the one not having the surgery!

Whilst I agree with the previous advice regarding diet immediately after surgery and trying to keep mobile, I don't agree that it always follows that people who undergo the surgery should expect food intolerance or bowel incontinence. We are all different.

I had my gallbladder removed nearly two years ago and was worried sick after reading about negative after effects. It was not helpful as it made me extremely nervous. I absolutely do not doubt that some people have negative side effects post surgery, but it is clear that people are more likely to post about negative experiences than positive ones.

My op went very well, I had the usual post op discomfort from the incisions, but they healed well, and day by day the discomfort subsided. I did not experience any shoulder pain from the residual gas used during surgery, as some people mention. I made a full recovery. Apart from a little constipation in the first couple of days post op, bowel movements are completely normal. I have not suffered from diarrhea or any food intolerance. I got my life back and no longer have to worry about those awful GB attacks.

I have every sympathy for those who endure negative issues post surgery, but I just wanted to reassure you, as a fellow mother who had this surgery herself, that not all outcomes are negative, it's just that you are more likely to read about those experiences. I so wish I had realised this pre-surgery and took everything I read as a given, because I almost scared myself half to death and took it as a given that I would be rushing to a toilet within minutes of eating!

Wishing your son all the very best for a good recovery.
