My 2 year old son was just seen at the emergency room for lower jaw swelling. The ER Doc said it is a submandibular salivary gland stone ... he has an appointment with an ENT in two days... anyone ever hear of a child so young suffering with this? Its really hard to increase his fluids because he refuses to drink from a regular cup and his sippy cup hurts too much, and its nearly impossible for him to suck from a straw... it hurts the poor guy too much... any suggestions?

I have been having salinary gland problems from my early childhood, maybe even two years. I wish it had been surgically removed back then. Had stone(s) removed from the duct twenty years ago and six months ago (now 55 years old). After last surgery I finally thought the problems were all over, but just a couple of days ago it started hurting badly. At he age of your boy it may help to remove the stone only if it is there. Generally, I did not have that much problems for decades. Six months ago and a just recently I had couth bad cold and it very soon reflected to (both times) big trouble with pain and not being able to eat normally.

My daughter had this problem when she was 1 year old. It recurred once after that a few months later. She received antibiotics and I was told to let her suck lollipops (with supervision) to increase flow of saliva. She is now 11 years old and has not had a recurrance.
