My 4 year old daughter has had molluscum since August this year. She has 11 spots currently including a few new ones in the last few days. We are using tea tree oil to dab on twce daily but it doesnt seem to be doing much and they are just getting bigger. I am worried that my 4 month old will get it and so am trying to avoid contact between the 2 children as much as possible which is awful. I feel I cannot talk to anyone about it as if they know it is contagious they will not want to see us. I worry that my daughter will give it to one of her friends and dont know what to tell anyone if they do ask about the spots. We are being so careful and keeping the areas covered by clothes but still new spots are appearing. I am considering trying thuja or possibly squeezing them to speed up process but wonder if anyone has any advice. I am really upset about it and 3 doctors have all just fobbed me off and made me feel neurotic. Surely Im not the only mum who feels this way. I am not sure if the spots are being spread by touching or simply from within.sadsadsadsad

Hi, my 4 year old son had moluscum. He caught it from my neice (around the same age). We bathed them together (I knew she had it but they had been told by there doctor it was not contagious). He had it for about 7 months. I tried Zyaderm but i am not convinced this cleard it up. When i bathed him the spots would get soft and the white center would poke out. I would get a pair of tweezers pull it out and then cover with a plaster. They are now gone finally. I changed his bedding every day and always put his used towel straight in the linen basket. My other neice did not get it from her sister. she has had he chicken pox vacination and I am convinced that this has preventedher form getting it hpe this helps

My daughter is 4 and has 13 spots, she has had most of these for 4 months. We are trying thuja treatment but I am thinking of trying squeezing them. Have even bought latex gloves ready! Just wondered how difficult they are to squeeze. You mention tweezers but this sounds quite tricky. How did you get your son to stay still? and how could you tell when it was all out? Two of my daughters spots which she has had right from the start are getting much bigger and I don't want the others to get to this size. I also think if you get rid of the ones that are there, it is more difficult to spread. How many spots did your son have and did they leave any scars at all? My doctor has said not to squeeze them because of the risk of scarring but I feel I have to do something. She has a new tiny one on her neck and I don't want it going up to her face.

I have also read on another website that if you can squeeze one of the original spots this then triggers the immune system to start fighting the molluscum.

Any advice would be very helpful.

    Thanks

    Lou

Hi. Did this ever work? Or what did? My son who just turned 2 started to have these spots for last 7 months. At the beginning there were only 3 spots for a long time and I used Zymaderm, which made one of them become huge, but nothing more. Then they suddenly the spots started to spread to his neck, chest and arm. Took him to the dermatologist and they prescribed Ranitidine. He's been taking it for 2 weeks now. I don't know yet if it is working or not. I was just wondering what happened to your daugther. Thanks

We used zymaderm also and had the white spots in the center. When we called the 800 number we were told that was part of the healing and to continue application. In about another 10 days, the white spots started popping and the molluscum have all cleared! I think sometimes you need to be persistent with the zymadem

I just wanted to say that this area is a great source of information.

We are in Surrey, and uur 6 year old girl was just diagnosed with MC, and we think that our 5 year old is about to follow. The 6 year old has some larger inflated spots, which are dispersed from her arm and some down her side. She has a couple of small ones on her face as well, on the side.

Our GP just told us 'do nothing', or more to the point, 'I can't do anything'. Sorry, but we don't buy this.

We have bought some Nelson's thuja cream and the 30c tablets. We also have bought some silica from Nelson's as well.

The Homeopath we saw said to continue with the 2 tablets/day for 2-3 weeks. I am not sure about this, and was wondering about people's experiences here. It seems like many are using this for 3-4 days, or a week. Does anybody please have any experiences they can share on how long you used thuja? Particularly the higher dosage. Also, did anybody else use Silica?

We are about to commence the treatment, and I will post back here to let others know how it is going.

After doing alot of homework on the other 'alternatives', such as silvercure therapies, or other 'natural' cures, we have decided to stick to more 'traditional' homeopathic remedies such as thuja, and even tee tree oil if need be.

Thanks to those who have posted so far. I will add to this.

    Thanks

    Al

    Hi

We used Thuja ointment and the 30c tablets on our 7 year old. This cleared our daughter's molluscum in about 4 weeks, although we had been warned that it could take longer than this to take effect. The homeopathic chemist we use also advised us to keep using the tablets for some time after the spots disappeared so that the virus could be completely dealt with in her system. I trust and value his opinion and in the end we used the tablets for about 8 weeks after that to make sure she would not have a re-occurrence. Her skin has been completely clear since then (June). We did not use silica.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Hi where did you buy the thuja from ? 6 year old daughter suffing bad with MC.

We have been using 30c Thuja tablets and cream on our 4year old daughter for the last 4 weeks and 2 weeks prior to that we were using the 6c strength but after speaking with the very helpful Freemans chemist they advised that 6c isnt really worth bothering with so we changed. My daughter has had it for nearly 5 months and as yet we haven't really noticed any difference in the spots. She has 14 spots but I am noticing more tiny ones appearing but I don't know if they necessarily get bigger. We were using the tea tree oil previously to starting the thuja and although it didn't clear it the chemist at Freemans said it probably helped to stop it spreading alot further. We are being extremely careful, washing hands and using separate towels and I am not bathing my children together. We have actually tried squeezing a couple of the spots to see what happens but they are very difficult to squeeze and although I have tried when my daughter is asleep she is a light sleeper! She will not let us near them at any other time.

I would be interested to hear what silica is meant to do as I haven't heard of this as a treatment.

I have heard good reports of the thuja so I am just hoping it works for us eventually although it may take months to have a reaction which is a long time to wait with such a horrible infection.

    Good Luck

    Lou

I have been using the Thuja ointment and 30c tablets on my 3 year old daughter for about 4 weeks. she has had MC since May last year and whilst the tablets / ointment have not proved a 'miracle' cure, (don't believe that there is one) I do believe that the treatment has helped restrict the spread of the infection, and no new ones have appeared for a lttle while now. At least 'treating' the condition makes me feel a little better following a fruitless visit to the GP. I am hoping that once this 'crop' of existing spots have completed their cycle (emerge, grow, erupt, scab, disappear)then no more will appear. I haven't spotted any new ones for a while. None on her face - but mainly down her sides / under her arms and on her bottom / thighs. i have supplemented the treatment with Abidec multi-vits to help boost her immune system - and have also given her eccinacea for juniors (from Holland and Barrett). I have been fortunate in that her 8 yr old brother does not appear to have contracted the condition despite them sharing baths. I know that this is not the case for other contributors. Good luck and hope that this helps.

This is a question for Helen or anyone else who may know this, how long do the individual spots generally take to go? My daughter has had her original 3 now since she first got them in August 2006, so for 5 months, and 2 of them are getting really quite big but they don't seem to be showing any sign of going. However, she has had 4 on each of the backs of her knees which are very small for about 4 months and they have stayed quite small and hardly show. Can't understand why they grow at different rates?

I think I feel abit like Helen, that as long as I am 'doing' something to try and help it makes me feel abit better. My husband thinks I am obsessed with the spots and to an extent I think I am but its that feeling of helplessness and desperation that I don't know how bad they will get! I too am giving my daughter multi vit, tho she is generally v healthy and eats v well.

    Any advice appreciated

    Lou

I'm 33 years old and was diagnosed with MC in May after seeing a couple of bumps around my waist. My doctor said that it would go away and not to worry about it...they did not say it was contagious!!!

Recently I noticed they have spread to other areas of the body, and I'm now paranoid about even touching my face in case they spread there. I know virtually all the entries on this forum are for children, and I'm now worried that I may have passed the virus onto my own ones given it's been 6 months and I did not realise until now that they were contagious.

As yet I have not sought any further treatment for these, but I intend to try and see if I can get any help from private medical insurance - I will let you know how I get on.

I feel sorry for any child or adult with this condition, and hope that one day (soon please!) that something can be found to cure this. In the meantime, I think I'll buy some tea-tree oil in the hope that I can stop the small few that I have from spreading further.

    All the best everyone!

Hello, this is an update on my post from 9th August 2006. My daughter, who is now 3, had MC all over her face from 8 months, and after badgering the doctors over 18 months, I finally got her an appointment with a specialist. He precribed Fucidin H Cream which over 4 months totally cleared the spots!

However I really don't know whether it was the cream that did this, or that the spots had reached the end of their life cycle, as the doctors had said it would take around 2 years to clear up.

She had really bad MC and was actually prodded by quite a few medical students as a rare case study... they really don't have any answers for us parents... they were going to freeze and scrape the MC off if it had not vanished by itself, which was going to be a painful exercise.

Now, unfortunately, my 18 month son has signs of MC, but they are just little bumpy spots near his eye and chin (maximum of 5 I would say, not the 30-40 my daughter had) and they are not infected or weeping so I am not *too* worried as yet... howver I am keeping a very close eye on him and if he gets worse I am going to the GP and insisting on treatment.

The GPs do not know what to suggest as it is a rare thing but parents have to insist on seeing someone specialist. As soon as I saw the hospital specialist he said that it was hard for parents to break the glass ceiling and get appointments, but worth persevering as the treatment for MC is there (the scraping) if the Fucidin H cream does not work.

Luckily for my daughter she hasn't been too affected by this experience, as she is still young, but she does say if anyone is not feeling well "Have you got itchy spots?".

Good luck to all you parents out there, I hope I have been of some help and reassurance. (Unfortunately, as is our policy, the email address has been removed) I would be happy to answer any questions!

Am pleased to hear your daughters MC went but sorry to hear you may have to go through it all again with your son. I cannot begin to tell you what I have been going through since my daughter was diagnosed in August 2006. But having read this site I do not feel so alone. GPs do seem very complacent about it but I think that is because it doesn't affect health and therefore they aren't bothered. My daughters spots aren't actually that bad, she currently has about 14, 2 of which are very large on her tummy, these are the oldest and show no sign of going. I have however started to notice a number of new tiny bumps. One on her neck which I am worrying may spread to her face. We have been trying thuja since December with no improvement and just last night we are experimenting with leukosilk tape on some of the spots (I read on a very good side, essentialbaby.com) which apparently you leave on for 7 days and this makes the core come to the surface.

Please can you tell me how you have coped with it, especially as your daughters were on her face and you couldn't cover them. I am paranoid about my baby getting it, I don't bath them together and I am even nervous when she gets close to my baby, I am that bad. I feel I am obsessed with it but don't know what to do. Its the not knowing of when the spots will go. They say that the immune system doesn't even know to start working for ages. It is just such a weird thing and one of the worse things for me is the fact that the spots are growing, that just freaks me out! My doctor is fairly sympathetic as her nephew currently has it, but she says she doesn't mind if her daughter gets it as they bath together. I wish I could feel like this. I know its not a serious thing and it will go but I feel our life is on hold at the moment and I am trying to keep us away from others. My daughter hates the spots and she is 4 but she is quite a switched on 4 year old and I just feel so sorry for her.

Sorry to ramble on but it is so good to be able to talk to someone who has experienced this virus as its not something you can talk about with friends. I have told my best friend as our daughters are best friends but I haven't told her the extent of the contagiousness as I don't want to scare her off!

I am at the stage now where I would even pay to go private to try and get something done about the MC, just to be able to sleep at night! My husband even had a few spots last month on his private parts (he didn't even tell me about it for a few days as he was worried how I'd react!) Think he got them from bathing with our daughter. He got some special stuff to paint on but it did burn abit. I feel like we are plagued by this horrible thing!

Do you think it is worth asking for the Fucidin cream? What does it contain?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks

    Lou

My husband got a few spots from our daughter as he bathed with her and he was given some special paint to burn them off. I would insist on treatment from your doctor as they should be alot more willing to treat an adults tougher skin. The doctor told my husband that once these were gone it shouldn't re-occur, we will have to wait and see but I do think that an adults immune system should fight it off alot easier and quicker.

We are actually trying the tape method with my daughter at the moment, leaving it on for a week and then hopefully the core will come out. Will update on how well this works, but at least if the spots are covered they can't spread.

Good luck, I would definitely be insistent with your doctor, my husband got treatment straight away.
