A relative of mine also had a turp but a few years later he was told his bladder had lost elasticity, so he has self cathed every 6 hours since then. He has no sensation that he needs to urinate so he self caths on a schedule. If you have no sensation of needing to urinate then this could be the case for you as well.
I had a laser turp 2 years ago and after 6 months started to have retention again. I self cathed every couple of weeks with an 18Fr cath to "keep the channel open" after my urologist removed some tissue blocking the bladder neck. After a year I started bleeding (maybe from the cathing) and needed a bladder neck resection and removal of bladder stones and cauterization of bleeders in the prostate and bladder neck. For 6 months I have been OK, but take flomax two nights a week (Mon & Tues) just to keep my stream good. I don't know if you tried flomax (actually I take the generic, tamsulosin) but it relaxes the bladder and prostate to improve the flow. If it doesn't work for you then your problem may either be an obstruction, a tight bladder neck or stones, or maybe your bladder muscles don't contract as you were told. However a cystoscope would find any obstruction or stones if they are there. Good luck.
