My body and brain don't recover with sleep.

Hello! I have been having some ongoing problems with my body for a while now. But it's been the last few days that my brain is taking a part in this too. I'm having serious problems concentrating and I am very clumsy, my extremities feel more rigid every morning and I have lost some control and precision doing everyday tasks as writing, cutting a meal or picking up things.

I have also been having some trouble picking words even in a casual conversation with my mom or friends and I can feel myself not remembering things, as if I don't pay enough attention at the moment.

Yesterday it got to the point that I felt as if I was drunk saying things that I couldn't process previously, and not feeling as myself.

I have been getting muscle fatigue quickly and losing control and sensitivity of legs and now arms too from any activity and it doesn't go away with sleep. It's at the point that even two jumps are a somewhat hard task.

In general I don't feel any (or very little) rested upon waking up and my feet and arms feel as if I've been doing excercises all night. I also have been falling asleep the second I go to bed and waking up after 5-6 hours feeling somewhat lost.

I had a lot of blood tests done recently and they're pretty fine.

I'm a bit concerned with all this. Maybe I don't get to the deepest sleep phase or maybe my body doesn't produce the chemicals responsible for recovery. I don't seem to find any information online and I don't know what to do. Do you know about any similar condition? What kind of specialist should I visit?

Thanks for reading

    Hi Navii,

It depends on what country you're living in. Some countries insist that you have to see a general practitioner first, to get a referral to a specialist, whereas others allow you to self-refer. It's often a good idea to see a general doctor first anyway, as they're best placed to decide which type of specialist you should see. I would imagine that they'd want you to see a neurologist.

Quite a lot of your symptoms also fit with general anxiety. This would be especially true if you're a young person, which I suspect may be the case. It's not unusual for people to go through phases like this in their teens or early twenties. This is also the time when you're susceptible to all kinds of viral infections which, though not fatal, can leave you feeling seriously under par for months.

However, you still need to get checked out by a doctor of some kind, to exclude any serious physical causes.

Sorry I forgot to mention my age. I'm 23 years old. I have got a private medical insurance so I can go see the specialist I want.

My other problems are body balance/control related so I've already seen a neurologist who kindly prescribed me antidepressants, that I'm not taking because of my overall calm state and the side effects which include a lot of the symptoms I already had. I've been taking some lexatin occasionally before sleep but it doesn't seem to help me or maybe I should gone for a whole 10 day treatment with it.

I have some more tests and a GP appointment these days so I'll share my problems and concerns with her.

Meanwhile, tonight I'm going start taking some new pills for sleep which have melatonin + valerian and another plant in them and will see how these work with me.

      Thanks for the replies!

    Dear Navill,

You don't say how old you are.  In now my 70s I have difficulties in always remembering correct words to use in some situations, or using the incorrect one.  But tests I have had report that I am about average for my age.  Your general practitioner would seem to be the first port of call, to get his/her advice on whether/where you should go further.
