I know I'm not going to be able to convince you, but this really is all down to anxiety. The feeling of the brain shutting down is a normal part of sleep - during which the conscious brain does indeed shut down.

This normally happens without us noticing it, but what's clearly happened here is that you did notice it one night. You're now going to bed every night in an anxious, hyper-alert state where you're guaranteed to become aware of this normal shutting-down.

You're going to have to break the cycle of anxiety some way or another to get past this.

is exactly right and we'll said. maybe try on your cell on YouTube for like calming sleep music. There are tons of stuff on YouTube and u find something that works for you. If you can try and focus on the music or nature and waterfalls or just whatever sounds you like and try to keep your focus on the music. I have tried to meditate however my mind goes all over the place so that doesn't work for me...but find what may work.

Glad to hear things are improving. I was always a bit of a nervous sleeper when I was young (retirement from paid employment cured me!) so I know how these things can arise.

Unfortunately, once you've gone through an episode like this, there's always a chance it may happen again - or maybe take a different form - next time you get stressed. The trick is to remember that you overcame it once, so you'll succeed again.
