My Brother is a Rock Star!

I had my right hip replaced 4.5+ years ago and found this forum at that time. I was 57 at the time and am now 62. I still have some residual issues; muscle weakness, scar tissue, leg length discrepancy. But all in all, I do not regret getting the surgery.

My brother is 60 and his left hip was bone on bone with two nasty bone spurs. When he first saw his surgeon, the doctor remarked that my brother must be a "tough son of a b***h" to be walking around like that. My brother is a production manager in the food industry and walks miles a day within a facility on concrete floors. He also cycles 100s of miles a month and is in great shape for his age. In fact, he cycled the day before his surgery at his doctor's suggestion!

On November 10, he had his surgery and was released the next day. By November 20, he was walking without a cane, off the heavy meds, driving his car and cycling on his recumbent stationary bike. He is absolutely amazing! All of this to say, if you are holding off on getting your hip replacement done because you are scared of the surgery, JUST DO IT. The change in your quality of life will be life-altering. The sooner you can get back to doing the things you love, the better.

Thanks for the advice, I'm in the stage of considering whether to have this done or not. Not sure my hip pain is bad enough yet.

If you are in UK get your name on the list, as it could be a very long wait! You can always postpone it.

i was told a 4-month wait this week which doesn't seem very long on the NHS as i was expecting 18-20 months.

I am amazed, I was supposed to have my op in March and was put back until September this year and that was private, as I thought I would have to wait months for the NHS. The previous one I had in 2017, it took nearly a year.

Well done to your brother. That is the beauty of staying active. prior to op, I only took paracetamol occasionally, even though my hip was bone on bone. Exercise is the best painkiller.
