My butt crack hurts a lot. There’s kind of a bump? Help

I’m a 14 year old girl and recently my Butt crack got itchy and I thought nothing of it. A few days ago I woke up and my butt crack hurted and itched a lot, that night I put some ice on it..? Then I woke up with even more pain. I can barely sit down, and it hurts to walk, it’s hurts a lot to do anything. I don’t want to tell my mom because I know she’ll freak out, and say it’s something else. I really need some help, idk what it is and idk what to do to make the pain go away. It’s like a small bump..? Kind of, at the top of my butt crack. I can barely sleep. I put som pain relief cream on it, but it hasn’t done anything. Someone please help me, I don’t want to go to the doctor. It hurts so much I don’t know why

Hey Cassandra. I know you don’t want to tell your mom or explain to a doctor because it can be super embarrassing, but you need to get it checked out sooner than later. I started having flare ups around your age and a bump would form and I’d be in so much pain and then the bump would burst and heal. It will have a disgusting odor when it does burst and it will make your tailbone the most sensitive to pain. Eventually it’ll heal only to randomly come back. If a doctor is able to treat you before it flares again, you might not have this issue anymore because it hasn’t gotten too bad. I waited years because I was too embarrassed and I ended up with a huge whole in my tailbone and my family all knew because I was bedridden for months while this huge wound healed. Trust me when I say I wished I hadn’t waited, because now I have a squishy scar that sometimes hurts if I sit for too long.

You have it exactly right.  Cassandra should get it checked out and treated ASAP.  The sooner the better.  Conversely the longer one waits the worse it gets and the more significant the procedure could become.

No need to panic, you should feel some relief.  Go to doc on Monday as planned.  They may prescribe you antibiotics which will help BUT NOT CURE the issue.  Be sure you see a Colorectal specialist who has experience with Pilonidal cysts.  If you are in the New York City area I have a name.  Otherwise just be sure that he/she is experienced in this, not everyone is.  There is also an excellent website called pilonidal.org that has in depth medical and practical information on this disease.

I know that from personal experience the sooner you address this the better.

      Good luck!

Use gauze and shower! I would always pour hydrogen peroxide down my lower back to help clean where the cyst was. Also try to keep the area as clean as possible as it closes up. I found that putting a sanitary pad to line that area would help with it draining!! Hope this helps!!

Hi, I tried to reply yesterday but the site is not allowing me to.  Basically be sure to see a colorectal specialist with experience in pilonidal cysts!  This is very important.  They may give you an antibiotic but this is not a long term cure.  Check out the pilonidal dot org website, it is excellent and helped me a lot.  I have had two of them.  The earlier you act on this with a specialist the better.

      HI Jane,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I actually saw DR. Harlin today ( such a coincidence: I just googled him). Since I am on antibiotics already , he offered to drain it today during visit or not to, stating its up to me. He also said if I decide to ( again it’s  all up to me), he can “cut it “ once infections is gone and it’s healed (mine popped up and drained). I kinda expected him to offer me a  solid plan and be confident as to what I have to do but now I am lost. He also mentioned that he doesn’t  Believe in antibiotics and I could be ok without them ( not sure how since half of my hurt was so inflamed ).

Can u please share your experience? What kind of procedure you had done ? How was the recovery ?

      Thank you !

I had two open healing excursions in the office, about 3 years apart.  Sometimes they return...  in both cases they were done right away and healed within 5 days.   The worst of the procedure is the initial anesthetic.  After that it’s painless but during the recovery it’s quite important to have help maintaining the wound.  The angle is awkward.

I’d go back to him if I ever had another problem.  He has an interesting manner; confident yet allows you to call the shots.  I liked his approach.  And incidentally I also got his name as a referral.
