My colonoscopy

2days ago I went for my colonoscopy.  I went in nervous, but expecting pain but would be ok.  Talk about rush job.  They no sooner put the needle in my hand,  administered tha sedative then they was doing the procedure.  I have never ever experienced pain like it, even my natural childbirth was a walk in the park compared to this.  I was not given any pain relieve, not even entinox, I asked them to stop for a minute, they dud then carried on.  I heard them say I had gone pale, and was sweating so they stopped. They then bunged  me on trolley for 5 mins on my side, got me dressed, had quick drink And was out.  I felt like a piece of meat on a conveyer belt.  Other than to give birth to my son I have never been in hospital before, and the colonoscopy will be my last.  I feel traumatised with the amount of pain I endured. I was so relieved when I read on here loads of people with pain relief and wasn't that bad, but unfortunately that wasn't my experience.

    Hi Melanie,

I am so sorry you had to go through this. If you need another colonoscopy, you must ask for general aneathetic. I researched this after my ordeal and found guidelines for gastroenterologists, which stated that if the patient instists on general anesthethic, they have to do it. If that particular hospital does not do it, they have to find you another hospital. Don't let them phob you off. They don't care about your trauma, they just want to have it easy. We are paying for health care in taxes, so they have no right to treat us like this.

I would also make a complaint if I were you.

    Take care

Thanks Sara, wish I had of known this before, when I see her in a couple of weeks if they mention it I will think about it, it's just trusting my hospital to do this, as a few years ago my mum went for an endoscopy and she wanted sedation, they said yes, then on the day said no, and it was only my mums perseverance that she would leave, they decided this time they would give her the sedation

I had sedation and Pethadine and still they had to abort the procedure because I was so distressed apparently, though I don't remember much about it apart from excruciating pain ended up having an MRI scan. You'd think in this day and age there would be a less barbaric procedure than the Colonoscopy or at least a GA

My husband said exactly the same, the prep was bad enough I was bleeding by the time I went to have colonoscopy, I think it's cheaper for the nhs to do it than expensive scans.

I would make of list of everything that would make this procedure acceptable, and bring a copy of it to the gastroenterologist before the procedure, and then, again at the start of the procedure.  I wonder if it is possible to have a reliable advocate present during the procedure to make sure the doctor follows your wishes.  After all, the doctor could say that your perspective is tainted because, after all, you were sedated.
