My daughter has just been diagnosed with SUFE/SCFE.

Hi to all, We just found out 1st Feb that my daughter has SUFE. I am almost speechless at this situation. I will admit while speaking to the specialist I was completely done in. I think shock took over and that was that. He talked about 2 types of operation and all I can remember is the small one and the big one. We couldn't make any sort of decision right there and then. I told him we will have to come home and do some research on this subject and will confirm by friday what we are going to do. We have talked about it and she will have the big one which means bigger cut. You may think my gosh she doesn't even know terminology, but hearing this news and seeming to be not very nice outcomes, with more problems or worse. IT WAS SO SHOCKING. I will be finding out exactly what the op entails. She is having the MRI scan next week. Anyway I am prob waffling and I'm trying to keep a brave face on for my baby, trying to be positive but then I go into think think think mode and feel like OH MY GOSH. Any help, advice from anyone would be fantastic.

please please reconsider getting your daughters hips pinned. read my story at the blog I have posted here. I have needed a hip replacement since being 12 years old becsuse I wasn't diagnosed and pinned.

Thanks nikinaki. I checked your blog but couldnt get your history of first symptoms, whether it was diagnosed as mild scfe or severe. kindly brief me here if possible. thanks.

the main reason why i am holding back on getting surgery done for my daughter is coz i have gone through a research published in an american ortho journal where they found out that in mild scfe cases 80% of the patients didnt have any complications in future life even when they didnt go for pinning. main condition/precaution is not to allow the slip to progress. hence my objective to minimize her activities for 3 months and then do another xray to compare the slip. it was measured at 24.8degree in early dec12 and i want to measure it again in march.

      Hi

I just wondered how you got on with your daughter?  My son had an acute slip nearly 2 years ago and he is still on crutches.  I know that you tried to minimize your daughter's activities to prevent the slip from progressing, but in my son's case, he did minimal activities (because I told him to), but his did not stop him from tripping over on a couple of occasions, and the action of tripping over caused his SUFE to become ACUTE, so you should not just leave it, as if the child has an accident it will become worse.  Anyway, there is a UK charity called STEPS, and they can give out phone number's of other parents who have been in the same situation as we try to offer help and support where we can.

hello again. it was mild to moderate when found 12m later. the damage done had caused the bone to die and some areas to begin to form bone spurs. Osteoarthritic already too. No previous problems before the fall. bexuase it has tried to heal in the slipped position is the reason it xaused so many issues. having said that I also know other sufe sufferers who have had pins and still had hip replacement by their 30/40's. Good luck I wosh you the best.
