My dermoid cyst experience

I’d been in a lot of pain for around 6/8 months it mainly starts the week before my period the increases as my period starts. I become very bloated, bleed very heavy and have extreme pain in the pelvic area. One night the pain became so bad I physcically couldn’t move so I decided it was time to go to the doctors.

The doctor examined me and because the pain was worse on my left side she referred me to the hospital for a ultra sound.  I had a internal and external and the examiner explained she’d found a cyst and to contact the doctor for the results straight away to get referred to a gynecologist.

When arriving at the doctors she explained they’d found 2 cysts both on the left ovary and both 5cm ( same size of a grape fruit) 1 looked like a dermoid cyst but the other they wasn’t sure of she took bloods that came back normal apart from being higher in iron than normal. My ca125 was 38.

When getting my appointment with the gynecologist she examined me again and re took bloods to check my hormones. She explained they weren’t sure if one of the cysts were attached to the bowels also so they were having a meeting with specialists, surgeons and doctors to discuss the best way to remove them as they may need to open me fully to remove from the bowel. The following week I went back and the explained they were firstly going to try key hole but I had to sign consent that if anything got damaged or they found anything else I’d be opened fully. I also had to sign to say that because both cysts were on the same (left) side I may need the whole ovary removing to.

I got my date for surgery the same week as I went to sign consent I had a pre op 2 days before then went in.

The surgery didn’t go 100% to plan I went in around half 9! And woke up at half 1. I thought it was strange as the told me it would only take around 1 hour to do. When I woke up I was in intensive care and the nurses told me I’d be staying in over night. I was attached to a drip for fluids but it was removed once I’d urniated enough.

Finally the doctor came round and explained once I was opened up they’d actually found out I had 4 cysts!! All inside the left ovary and all dermoid. As they were removing them one burst and the toxic poison from the cyst leaked into my body so they had to drain and jet wash it clean to remove any toxic fluid. They managed to keep the ovary and they have reconstructed it but explained it may now cause eptopic pregnancies as it’s smaller and closer to the Fallopian tube. I am only 24 but when I do want children and get pregnant I will have to have more scans and scans early to make sure it isn’t eptopic. They managed to do key hole and I have 4 scars 1 at the belly button 2 either side and 1 in bikini line.

It has now been 1 week since I left the hospital I’m still in pain. The pain from the gas put inside me has gone as I drank a lot of peppermint tea to help. I had to go to the doctors 2 days after leaving the hospital to get anti biotics as I was constantly shivering and sweating and thought I may have a infection. My scars are sore and the belly button area still weaps. I am going to the doctors tomorrow for them to check it as cloudy yellow fluid has been leaking mildy. I’m still finding it difficult to walk as I did before but I’m slowly getting better.

I am still waiting for the biopsy results of the cysts but hopefully nothing bad was found !

    Hi Izzy!

I myself had surgery on an ovarian cyst last Wednesday (a week today) and I'm still in pain and finding it difficult to walk normally like before, but I am getting there slowly but surely.

My cyst was 30cm and inside they found others, the biggest 20cm! It had started to grow behind my bowel too so they did have to convert to opening me up. I've got a few inch scar on bikini line, 1 on each hip and one belly button. This one is weeping a little but I'm keeping an eye on it.

I was catheterised during the operation and I'm going to the doctors for some antibiotics as I think it's caused a urine infection- really don't need this getting worse!

I ended up losing my ovary and tube because of the damage the cyst(s) had caused but he said my other ones are perfectly healthy and he doesn't see why once I'm recovered I can have children (I'm only 25 and don't have any ATM).

The recovery takes its time and it can be a long painful process. Just stick at it and you'll be ok.

    We can do it!

    Feel better soon x
