My diabetes insipidus journey

Posted , 61 users are following.

I'm a 34 years old and was diagnosed with central diabetes insipidus in Sept 07. This diagnosis followed a prolonged headache (about 2 weeks) and fever (10 days) after which I became extremely thirsty and could hardly sleep for getting up in the night to go to the bathroom!

Unfortunately the doctors have been unable to pinpoint the reason behind why I suddenly developed this rare illness, which I understand is likely to be permanent. I now take desmopressin nasal spray about twice a day. I continue to feel very tired and sleep 10 hours a night.

I'd be very interested to hear from anyone else out there who has had a similar experience so we can compare notes and exchange coping tips! I'm fine when I have my spray with me, but am dreading the day when I forget it and am forced to return to the drink - pee - drink cycle.

    Hello Guest

I've been battling with this disease for a couple of years. I started out with the same systems and thought it was my prostate causing my frequent urination and not sleeping, tiredness. After seeing urologists to no avail, my wife found the systems on the internet to which my family doctor sent me in for testing. I take the tablets, but I found out taking to much lowered my sault after a stint in the hospital. So now I take one a day maybe 2 but spread apart like 8 to 12hrs apart. Also a good idea is to get the doctor to prescribe potassium chloride powder, I mix it in a bottle of water or Gatorade to help with the dehydration. I've just joined and glad to meet others like me. I know the struggle, and yes to talk and compare notes is great to help one another.

Can you please explain in detail to me how the potassium chloride helps? And when to take it....etc?

Hello everyone! I wonder if someone still here in this forum. I desperately need some help. I am battling with DI since June 13th, 2017 right after my pituitary surgery. Please can you let me know if someone is still here?

Hi there-- yes, some of us still here smile Where do you live? I can only speak from my own experiences and if you have questions about medications etc, I have found this varies between countries ...

I have had DI for 27 years after a craniotomy to remove a pituitary tumor. Why do you say you are battling with it?

Linda! Hi! I could use some advice! I am taking desmopressin now for DI...and it's been tricky to figure out how much to take and when etc....

My problem is I wake up extremely fatigued and thirsty...this has been going on for years now! Finally I was diagnosed, but the endocrinologists (2 I've seen now) have no advice really since they have never had a patient with DI before.

So far these are my observations:

I believe i have taken too much Desmopressin when it gives me a headache. I discovered this one evening working out that all of the sudden I got a headache...I figured the combo of the drug and sweating and drinking lots of water at the gym eft me with very little sodium in my blood. So I ate peanuts and my headache went away.

I am now having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep at night taking desmopressin.

I have had a few nights where I sweat in bed and wake up to a wet t-shirt and sheets.

I have had a few nights so far when I actually had to get up multiple times to pee at night, whereas before I took desmopressin I could sleep throughout the whole night and not have to pee until morning. Just the exact opposite effect that I should have from this drug.

My main complaint is fatigue in the morning. My extreme thirst symptoms didn't begin until about one year ago. Now I have both and they typically accompany each other and are worst in the MORNING.

I have to sleep 10-12 hours most days in order to feel good enough to get up and start my day. Mornings are always a struggle and still are even after taking the desmopressin.

I have only taken desmopressin for one week now, and in different amounts/different times of the day broken up. I started with .05mg in the morning but it did nothing except give me a headache. I must have not needed to dilute my blood at that time....? Not doing that anymore; now I'm taking 1mg about an hour before bed (figured if I take it awhile before bed then I could fall asleep easier...so far not the case). Still waking up at night and thirsty in the morning...some fatigue...sleeping in late.

I decided I won't take it in the morning anymore since during the day I feel fine. It's only in the mornings when I suffer...so I figure taking it at night can put me ahead of the curb to help me stay hydrated for when I wake up. Yet as stated above, I am not receiving that affect yet.

      Which leads me to...........

Is my body just trying to adjust to it? Perhaps I will be able to fall asleep just fine in a couple weeks? Perhaps it will start working as it should in a couple weeks? Perhaps I will finally wake up without a struggle and feel great and ready to start my day on something more like 8 hours of sleep in a couple weeks?

      This is my hope!!!!

      SO!

Any tips? Any insight? Any connections that you may be aware of that I just haven't figured out yet?

THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY SLEEPY, DESPERATE LITTLE HEART!!!!!!

      Kimberly

I too foind that increasinf Desmopressin decreased my sleep qualty, How about trying half the dose of the nighttime Desmopessin you are taking and just skipping the morning dose, i.e., Desmopressin once a day?

I will try half a desmopressin tonight and see how that goes. I quite taking it in the morning, as really my symptoms only happen *in* the morning as soon as I open my eyes, and by that time it's too late really in preventing another "bad" morning. So I figure if I wake up and feel decent enough then why take it? So I'm not. Just in the evening now in hopes to prevent waking up feeling so aweful.

Did you do anything to help you mitigate the poorer sleep quality caused by your desmopressin besides lower your dose? Did lowering your dose seem to noticeably help? Also how much sleep do you find you need/ed when you were at your worst with your inflammation induced DI?

      Thank you!

I can say that I was just diagnosed after years of gradually experiencing bouts of fatigue that would keep me in bed for sometimes 12-13 hours at a time, with my fatigue so bad that I got anxiety over making plans with people, and often had to cancel plans and even work just to "recover" all day since waking and not feeling decent enough to start my day until LATE afternoon or early-late evening....not a way to live. It was about one ear ago when my extreme thirst symptom turned on like a light switch, despite having a bigger drive for water than most people for year prior....but this thirst was like none other.

Now, I am a very health conscious person. My health is stellar aside from this issue and having genital herpes since about 2001 (which is basically dormant the majority of the year). I am set back with my energy/I do get bad fatigue sometimes when this virus surfaces, but typically I know what it feels like when it starts to become active so I dowse it immediately with acyclovir for maybe two days and it's back to being dormant without having to experience any if much repercussion on my skin.

Otherwise I exercise regularly (weights 5xweek), yoga, hiking....and eat a whole food diet, do not smoke, have alcohol very occasionally, manage my stress levels as well as I can, etc.

So naturally, I would rather not take any medication that is not necessary. Therefore....to circle back to your inquiry (with a little added background of my personal health scenario), I started out with a half of a 0.1mg desmopressin tablet for the first week. I still woke up with terrible thirst and feeling like I hadn't got a wink of sleep (really bad exhaustion...not a typical "sleepiness", mind you...it feels like a straight-up nervous system depth kind of wiped out feeling...whose remedy is to try to fall back asleep and sleep it off and drink huge gulps of water of course).

SO....I am not trying one 0.1mg tablet broken up into two times a day. I am breaking it up because the first time I took a whole 0.1 mg tablet when I picked it up from the pharmacy for the first time a week ago, it gave me quite the buzz...like I drank 3 cups of coffee or something. Don't get me wrong, it felt great! But it also didn't feel "right", and especially at 6pm at night with sleep just around the corner.

Also i will note, I took a half a 0.1mg tablet before a weight training session the other evening (5pm took it, began training at about 6), and my sprint warm up had to be cut short as I felt overexerted...like all of the sudden I wasn't conditioned for the sprints that I normally do; it felt much harder, my heart felt like it couldn't keep up. And then....during my deadlifts that followed, I got to maybe my 6th rep out of 12 and was incredibly winded! I had to stop and seriously catch my breath something fierce! It did not feel right, like my system was having to work too hard to do something that otherwise my body can withstand with effort however with grace.

Also notable is that night when I laid down to sleep, my heart felt like it was working too hard. The rest of my body was relaxed and ready for slumber...totally in my parasympathetic state, but my chest...my heart felt like it was still wide awake and working far too hard for someone who is lying down and preparing to drift off to sleep.

One more thing... I've been experiencing lingering headaches for the past like, 4 days now. And I never get headaches... The first few days no headaches. But now it's just ever-present, like my brain is slightly inflamed.

I hope this is helpful to you in some way. Also, if you have any insight for me, I am much appreciative!

PS: Not sure how my Central Diabetes Insipidus was triggered, but I did have a major blow to the front of my head from a skateboard accident (face slammed into the concrete below me). This was maybe in 2001/2002, and I can't pinpoint an exact day or month that my fatigue began or my drive for water increased, but my fatigue was a gradual increasing issue until today when now it is a really tough endeavor to get many if not most of my days started....but my extreme water need as mentioned above, did flash on one day from a simple "I drink more water than most people" to "I need water right now or I won't know what to do with myself".

    Sad to hear about that.

I do not have such disease but one of my relatives has almost the same case as you.

May I ask, has your relative been treated for his or her diabetes insipidus? I am curious if he or she has had any success with treatment. Also do you know if he or she knows what triggered it? Thank you in advance!

She has changed his diet plan and her sugar level is in control. She also does regular exercise.

I think maybe you are referring to diabetes mellitus...which has to do with decreased insulin sensitivity and high blood sugar levels. Diabetes mellitus is different than diabetes insipidus, which is what I have. Diabetes insipidus is when my hypothalamus/pituitary does not produce enough of the hormone vasopressin which communicates to the kidneys to help recirculate water from the body back into the bloodstream and maintain body hydration versus peeing it all out....hence my thirst and general electrolyte imbalance. My blood sugar levels are perfect.

      Thanks for the detailed explanation.

I also thought earlier as it is about diabetes mellitus smile
