My doctor put a grey gel on a lump on my toe and part of my toe is now black?

On Tuesday I went to the doctor because I had this small red and black lump on my toe, it was originally dark brown/nearly black so I thought it was a mole, after it turned colour I got concerned and went to the doctor about it.
He said it could be a blood vessel pointing through my skin, so he went and put this weird thing on it. He used a giant matchstick and it had this greyish stuff on the end, and he said this stuff would freeze the lump and make it shrink into nothing. He told me that this stuff washes off fine but I should try and not get water on it for a few days.
What he didn't tell me is that this stuff could turn part of my toe black. I don't think he told me because I'm not sure it's supposed to happen.
I remember having some of this grey stuff around the lump, and over the course of 24 hours it got darker and darker, now turning into a complete black colour. I'm really frightened as I'm not sure this was supposed to happen, and I can still feel the lump on my toe. It looks like I now have a giant flat mole on my toe with a tiny bump in the middle. I'm going back to the Doctor on Monday/Tuesday about it but I want to know what my Doctor put on my toe, and why part of my toe has turned black? Please help, I'm really anxious.

I forgot to mention I tried washing the black stuff around the lump off but it didn't wash off at all, and that's making this even scarier.
