My ear sorted!!!

Hello,
after (i'm sorry but only) 2 weeks of prodding and poking and putting oil in and using every ear product under the sun except for the ear candles (cos I burnt myself last time) I am pleased to say I have sorted my ear.
After the doctor said there was nothing wrong with either ear I eventually came online and did a self diagnosis. I was suspecting that the problem was on the other side of my ear drum so a eustachian tube blockage made sense.
I felt like I had asparagus growing in one ear and had tinnitus of varying degrees and pitches.
Like the rest of you it was making me miserable, grumpy and it was hard to work and focus.
Yesterday my Osteopathic colleague worked on me and released tight neck muscles and scalp muscles.
This morning I woke up and the deafness and tinnitus was really bad.
Now, before I tell you what I did .. here is the theory.
The deafness and tinnitus is caused by gunk covering the inside of the ear drum... prodding, poking and closing the nose and blowing pushes the gunk upwards which clears the eardrum for a short time then the gunk comes down again. The gunk has to come out DOWNWARDS. How to we get the gunk to come out downwards? By breathing in. Breathing in takes air down to the lungs which will produce suction in the eustachian tube.
So what I did in bed was to lie on the side of the good ear.
I then closed the nostril with my finger on the good side only and breathed in through the nostril on the bad side. I then closed the nostril on the bad side and breathed out through the nostril on the good side. I repeated this several times and just knew it was going to work. I'm sure doing the same practise upright should work just as well.
It wasnt totally better immediately but I sensed an improvement. Now having been to work and been out in the cold I can tell you it is better!!! No more asparagus in my ear!!!!
So, blowing the nose is not a good idea. It makes things worse. When having to blow the nose try to do it gently and aim the air out of the good ear .. if you have one.
If you have ear wax, the procedure I prescribed could make this worse as it will be sucking the wax onto the outside of the eardrum.
I am now taking garlic tablets to reduce the catarrh and echinacea and golden seal tincture to clear infection and catarrh.
The procedure is described as a pranayama technique in yoga and is called Surya Bhedana when breathing in through the right nostril and Chandra bhedana when breathing in through the left nostril
The book \"Light on Pranayama\" by BKS Iyengar says that the effects of this technique are:
It soothes and invigorates the nerves and cleanses the sinuses. It is good for persons suffering from low blood pressure.
It also says never perform Surya Bedhana and Chandra bhedana on the same day.
So to recap:
To clear eustachian tube of bad ear
Close nostril with finger on side of good ear
Breathe in through nostril on side of bad ear
Close nostril with finger on side of bad ear
Breathe out through nostril on side of good ear
Repeat, always breathing in on bad ear side and out through good ear side.
If both sides are blocked I'm not sure what to recommend but I'm sure understanding that the stuff needs to be sucked down using the in breath you will be able to work something out.
Now, to monitor progress I used my sound healing experience. I covered my good ear and made an oooooooooooooo sound. The oooooo resonated really well in my good ear.
I then tried the same in my bad ear. No resonance at all.
After the clearing procedure, even though I still felt my ear was blocked the resonance was much improved so I knew things were changing.
It may return, but I am so clear that the theory is correct I know I will be able to deal with it.
I really hope this helps others out there. Good luck.

Hi Treespirit. Thank you for your post. I have had a blocked ear for 2 month with ringing, and at times it felt like I had a shell over my ear. The breathing technique above really helped. I was doing it for 10 days when ever I remembered it was starting to improve. I then bought boots dual action wax remover and used a whole bottle over 48 hours. It was crackling and popping like rice crispier, but to no avail still blocked. I was about to give up and booked into the clear ear clinic in central London as the wait to see an ENT to n the NHS was 58 days on average then yesterday there was a scary whoosh and it popped. So relieved. If anyone is still totally stuck the clear ear clinic offer a free consultation and then sit 85£ for a clear out. While this isn't ideal if your at the end of your tether probably worth every penny. I am so appreciative to be back to normal. I was struggling in social situations and was only half present. Wishing you all well your ears and I hope you all get better soon.Big love

Hello. I came across these posts and was praying to find any information I could on ETD. About 5-6 weeks it seemed as though my allergies were really bad and I began to feel lightheaded with an occasional pain in my ear (no ringing in the ears). After the lightheadedness getting worse and realizing that I may just have a sinus infection, I decided to go to the ENT. He prescribed me Levaquin for what he said was a sinus infection. After a week of being on Levaquin, I didn't see any positive results. So of course I called my doctor and waited for his call. Many hours later he finally called me back. He changed my antibiotic now to Bactrim. It has been a week now that I have been on bactrim and again I don't see any changes other than there hasn't been any yellow in my mucous. My ear is still bothering me and I still feel lightheaded and feel unbalanced. Having said that, I made an appointment yesterday with the other ENT that I see from a different practice. I told him that I get a pain in my ears and under my ears, hear crackling sounds once in while as if there was water in it, get so lightheaded that I feel like I'm going to fall, and get this feeling like my ears are full or have pressure in them. He looked in my ears, made me take an audiology test and said that it's probably ETD and my TMJ. First he said the lightheadedness could be from these then when I asked him later if the lighthesdedness was due to the ear he said no and told me that I should follow up with my primary physician and neurologist about the lightheadness. Is it me or did he contradict himself? Anyway, all he could recommend was a Medrol pack which I really didn't want to take unless it's a dire emergency especially because I have MS. He understood and told me to take a decongestant like Allegra d or mucinex d. I explained that I basically have been taking mucinex d practically everyday except for the past few days. He told me to keep taking it. He said this should clear soon and if it doesn't get any better to see him again. Ok.. so all I have to ask is soon? What is soon? I have been dealing with this for weeks now. I am starting to get anxiety over this because I am so frustrated and I'm almost afraid to leave my house and actually have not much motivation to leave based on how I feel. I now have an appointment with my neurologist today as per my ENT 's orders. I just tried the breathing technique, did it help? Not yet but maybe it takes time from what have read in the comments above. I have also tried drinking apple cider vinegar which hasn't helped yet either. My question to all of yourself two things.
1. Have you ever experienced anything like The lightheadedness and the pain in and under the ear?
2. Do you have any recommendations?
Im absolutely freaking out because I want to feel like a person before and stop driving my husband crazy.
thank you

Thanks for this advice man. I have had my right ear blocked due to the eustachian tube issue and have both recurring ear pain and swollen tonsils on right hand side.
I have gone to 3 ENT specialists in the course of 4 months, and everybody checks ear and says the pain is due to sinus and acute tonsilitis issue. I have been prescribed a lot of heavy dosage Antibiotics but none of them worked, as I think it is not due to a bacterial infection.
I have tried lot of oils including olive+garlic juice, but none of them worked. I have have tried closing my nose and blowing through my ears but on the left ear pops.
So I have tried the deep breathing technique you mentioned almost to the point of having lungs swell to the maximum possible (like a balloon) and it is immediately showing some result and I see some activity in the right ear already. Thanks a lot for this suggestion. Will keep you posted if it gets resolved

Move only your bottom jaw from extreme left to extreme right few times voluntarily. You will feel swooshing sound from bad ear or some some air being released.
Another solution for built up wax is to be in shower with warm water running and let it seep into ear and after some time let the water come out. Dry with towel gently. If water does not come out easily, then jump in some open space a couple of times with both legs off the floor(sort of like skipping but jumping higher)
Another solution is to take some Vitamins A and Zinc capsules or some heavy duty vitamins for 3-5 days straight to treat any vitamin deficiency issues.

Well I just tried your technique and the noise in my blocked ear was incredible. Usually I hold my nose and blow and my ear gives a muffled pop but doing it the way you suggested was a completely different experience. Here's hoping it makes a difference, will keep trying, have had this problem for over 2 and a half years now and really fed up with it

I have had problems with a fluttering in right ear and a tapping noise ,for a few years it comes and goes now it is back and far worse more constant ,I have been trying Sterimar nasal spray as I have
sufferedfrom catarrh for years but due to Glaucoma most sprays etc I cannot use so this is at
present the only one ,I had been using Potters Catarrh Mixture which I found helpful but for some
monthsnow it has been out if stock so I have used Covonia untilPotters becomes available
As you see I have been putting it down to catarrh ,yesterday it eased slightly andI went for a short ride
inthe car and the ear went potty had to put pressure on ear to get back home ,it eased for a while
but last night it was back and I really did not think I could carry on with this horrible sensation.
any how looking at your site has given me hope and I am trying your breathing routine ,and
stopped the nasal spray and just one spoonful of Covonia ,to seeifthis eases it today.
fingers crossed and thank you . Love Jan

I am having Eustachian tube problems again.....nothing would clear it....then I remembered I owned a Hitachi magic wand...... (expensive sex toy vibrator/!!!!) I put it on the eustachian tube and behind my ear for a while, plus I also 'rolled' it down the tube....and it cleared! - it has since got blocked again, so I obviously have some issue, but it did offer 4.5 hours of relief.
