My eardrum hole has scared and now I have neurological symptoms

Hey all,

I am still recovering from a tympanoplasty after 6 months - apparently the eardrum has a neo-tympanic membrane with only one thin layer, ans scars arround the edges.

Today, I feel constant pressure on the operated ear. I have unbearable pain in ear and throat, which become worse every-time I yawn or have hi-cups. This pain irradiates to the chest.

I have visited numerous doctors and the conclusion is that I have neurological damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve. When I am in pain, this drains all my energy and the only thing I can do is sleep.

My questions are:

  • how can I take care of monolayer eardrum? I know it is very sensitive to pressure and I would like to make it thicker and healthier.
  • how can I regenerate the nerve endings that are damaged in the ear?

Many thanks

If you have this damaged nerve pain/neuralgia and no medication gives you any relief you need to see a neurosurgeon. I'm not sure there are any ways you can regenerate the nerve endings. There is no way you can make an eardrum thicker. Just make sure you never put anything in your ears to make more damage. Your eardrum may still be healing but dont put up with this pain.

Hi Filipe! I personally have never gone through anything like this, but I have a military friend who had this procedure done, and according to his doctor's recommendations, what you can do to help the tissue regenerate is to keep the ear dry, avoid inserting anything inside, even if it's a cotton swab to clean it, and avoid blowing your nose. He also gave the tip of (gently) putting a silicone earplug or a cotton ball covered with Vaseline in the ears when showering.

Other than that, be sure to keep up with your doctor.
